Emergency Relief Aid for Hospitality Employees

Dear Restaurant & Bar patrons,

Local restaurants, bars & nightclubs, hotels and other hospitality services are the backbone of our communities, tourism, and redevelopment in every corner of Lebanon.

The Hospitality sector directly employs over 200,000 people across the country, and indirectly employ more than 350,000 of workers up and down the food supply and delivery chain -- from producers, packers, fisherman, linen services, delivery people and more -- who depend on the continued revenue of restaurants to stay in business.

In addition to the catastrophic events of recent days, the sector has been faced with an economic collapse, a major currency devaluation, a series of continuous closures as the whole country confronts a global pandemic.

This ‘triple crisis’ has now merged into a ‘quadruple crisis’, which will further deepen the suffering of sector who has already been pushed to the brink.

Following the 4th of August #BeirutExplosion, humanitarian relief aids are now crucial with over 200 lives lost, thousands injured, numerous still missing and even more left without a roof over their heads.

On an industry level, the destruction of hospitality establishments has claimed the lives of many food service workers and the livelihoods of hundreds of other survivors. This latest blow is insurmountable without your immediate help.

In numbers, the destruction has impacted over 2000 hospitality establishments, 250 in Mar Mikhaël and Gemmayzeh alone. This translates into over 5000 jobs currently either suspended or lost and a substantial number of them being breadwinners. Many need urgent relief to survive, heal and move past this new hurdle.

Our Mission Today is to help save the sector yet again especially in Gemmayzeh and Mar Mikheal being the areas with the most hospitality establishment density AND the most affected by the #beirutexplosion. At the moment, we are busy:

1- Gathering data to document the damages the blast has left on hospitality establishments.

2- Raising funds to help rebuild damaged establishments.

3- Supporting thousands of jobless employees throughout the coming period of unemployment during the re-construction phase (3-6 months).

4- Raising awareness among the general public on the impact the catastrophe has left on the sector by providing accurate reliable data.

In brief, our duty now lies in the recovery of the many jobs lost, the restoration of a stable source of revenue to many families, as well as bring life back to our beloved Beirut.

We are currently at the stage of compiling solid data from each affected establishment in the area and studying the best mechanism to distribute the aid and confirm the receipt of the funds by the employees of each establishment.

We will be posting regular updates of our efforts with the transparency and accuracy the situation requires.

We have all danced, laughed, grown, dreamt on the streets of Gemmayzeh and Mar Mikhaël. With your help, we will be able to rebuild and bring back the spirit of our community.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE FUNDRAISER:

My name is Angela Sawan and I am a Lebanese Social activist and a Food & Beverage operator in the area affected by the Beirut explosion.

I am Co-Founder of Save Lebanese Hospitality, an initiative created to support bars & restaurants during the re-construction phase in the affected areas following the Beirut explosion.

The funds will be distributed directly to employees of bars & restaurants of the area most affected by the Beirut explosion. A survey is currently being carried out to gather data of the affected stores, the number of employees each store currently employs, if each employee is single or in charge of a household, how many people he/she is in charge of and how much time each store needs to finish the process of rebuilding in order to narrow down the need of each store for funds. The funds received will enable the employee to put food for him/her & his dependents on the table during the re-construction period.
