Emergency Pet Surgery for Baby Moo

Donation protected
On Sunday, September 29th, I noticed that my sweet kitty Moo had an abscess on the bottom of her back right paw. She's an indoor cat and doesn't get into much trouble, so we were a little baffled as to what could have caused it. Later the same day, I noticed a second abscess further up the same leg. The one on the foot was open and draining; the one on her leg still closed. She was acting fairly normal other than licking the abscess on her foot now and then, so we made her a vet appointment for a few days later and kept the foot abscess cleaned and wrapped in the meantime, changing her bandage twice daily.

The vet confirmed the two spots were abscesses and that she would need surgery to cut them open, clean them, do an antibiotic injection, and insert drains. All told with the surgery and pain meds, this procedure came to $680. A vet bill of that size wasn't in the budget, but we got it done. Moo is my baby and has been with me for 12+ years through thick and thin, since I was a teenager.

We went back to the vet today, Tuesday October 8th, to get the drains removed so she can finish healing up. Unfortunately, she wasn't healing like the vet hoped she would be. The antibiotics aren't working as they should. The vet left the drains in and tried another antibiotic, and had me make another appointment for a follow-up evaluation this coming Friday. At that point, if Moo still isn't improving, we'll be looking at either A) Taking a sample from the abscesses and getting it extensively tested to find out what kind of weird bacteria we're dealing with, or B) doing a more invasive surgery to completely take out all of the infected tissue. I don't yet have price quotes for these additional procedures, and we're hoping we won't need them, but given the news today, we're all worried. The vet said this is a strange case.

This second vet visit was another $25, which I didn't hesitate to pay, but it's discouraging (and daunting) wracking up bills when the treatment isn't even working and you have no idea where it's going to go from here.

So far, we've paid $705, which was already a struggle. We're trying to stay positive, but we're distressed over what kind of decisions we're going to be faced with on Friday. We can't afford another surgery or expensive procedure, but I would hate to come this far and have to give up. Moo is a sweetheart, and she and I have been through everything together. She's starting to get up there in age (she's 13), but is in fantastic health and great spirits. It would be one thing if she was old and decrepit and miserable and ready to go, but she's not. She still has good years left in her.

It's heartbreaking knowing that if money wasn't an obstacle, we wouldn't hesitate to get her whatever procedures she needs and we wouldn't even be worrying about whether or not she has a future. I feel so helpless knowing that she does have a future, but it's dependent on if we can afford to give it to her.

We are so grateful for any help that anyone is able to give. Baby Moo means the world to us, and she's trusting us to do what's best for her. Funds will go directly to paying for the previously incurred $705, and will put us in a position to say yes should she need further procedures. Thank you for reading her story!
