Emergency medical expenses fundraiser for Char

On Christmas Eve while on a vacation cruise with her family Charlene became very sick using the ships hospital. As soon as the ship pulled into port she required emergency transportation to a hospital in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. She was immediately placed on antibiotics until she could undergo surgery to repair a perforation in her digestive tract. Surgery went well and she then spent a few days in ICU and is now doing the hard work of recovering in a hospital where the primary language is Spanish.  Her husband Josh has been with her every step of the way, while her adult and teenage children stayed on the cruise and eventually returned home.

As you can imagine, bills have piled up very quickly and credit cards have been maxed out.  Josh will be able to submit some of the charges to his insurer in the States, but there are many things that will not qualify for reimbursement.  One such thing is the $7800 transport from ship to hospital and possibly the $6200 that was spent on medical care while on the cruise ship.  Expenses also not covered include medications, food and a place for Josh to sleep. Josh and Charlene will also need help getting home to the States where Charlene may need continued medical care.  They are currently looking at a hospital bill in Mexico of at least $120,000 some of which may be reimbursed by insurance.  However, we do believe they will need to pay prior to leaving the country and we are working with them to move some money around to make this happen.  It’s an overwhelming experience on many levels for both of them and their family. I am one of Char’s good friends dating back to middle school and will be dispersing the funds to their account so that they can pay incoming medical bills, have money for Josh for meals and a place to rest so that he can by Char’s side. We want to eliminate as much stress and financial distress of the situation so that Char can just focus on healing and Josh can be there with her.
