TL;DR: Was evicted from on-campus housing, raising money for more permanent housing and to pay off student balance
Hello! My name is Mari, I'm 20 years old, and I have been attending Western Washington University full-time and living on campus since fall 2022. I would not have been able to go to college without financial aid and have been covering the cost of tuition and housing with the Pell Grant, the College Bound scholarship, and federal loans. While I have consistently made an effort to go to my classes and turn in the assignments, and my grades speak for themselves (I made the WWU president's list for fall 2023), my mental health had been steadily declining for the past year due to financial hardship, food insecurity, and lack of support from and contact with family. The possibility of homelessness had always been there, as I had been having problems with financial aid since winter 2022 and did not have a home to go back to. I spent almost the entirety of the three-week winter break completely alone and not knowing how much longer I would have a roof over my head, and this continued after break ended. Following a mental breakdown about a month into winter quarter this year, I was advised by a care specialist to withdraw from my classes. Unable to get out of bed, let alone leave my dorm for the next few weeks, I eventually decided to submit a petition for a Dean's Withdrawal of Hardship. My petition was immediately approved and I was granted the withdrawal, but it dropped me below full-time status and my financial aid for both winter and spring quarter were suspended. As I had taken the withdrawal after the appeal deadline for winter quarter had already passed, there was no possibility of having my financial aid reinstated, and I received an eviction notice on 4/5/24. I was given less than two weeks notice to move out by 4/18, and as of right now, I have nowhere to go and no money for temporary housing. I had plans to move in with my boyfriend this summer, but he is unable to get an apartment until June at the absolute earliest. I am looking to raise money for the aforementioned apartment or a motel to stay in somewhere in the Seattle area until I can move into more permanent housing.
Anything at all genuinely helps so much! Even just sharing would be very much appreciated, and if there are any fundraisers or mutual aid you would like me to share in return please DM me at @ponyo1uvr on Instagram and I will gladly post something on there or TikTok <3
Thanks for reading!
