Back to School

Donation protected
Back to school -- help 6 children get school uniforms, shoes, books, supplies and food. We have had a fun summer so far: highlights include sleeping over on a farm -- grooming horses, swimming in a pond, hiking in the woods! We have been to several beaches and met friends (the picture is from a play date with the Figuerez family at North Avenue beach) along with going to the Gay Pride parade, libraries and doing some odd jobs.  Now, we are trying to raise another $3000 to cover all school related costs and food for the fall. Our next push will be for the holidays!
Thanks for your continued help. The kids are excited to get back to school!

From February:  goal completed!
Thanks to everyone who assisted, our family now has an apartment, appliances, furniture and is getting settled in (started new schools, etc.) BUT Mom was hospitalized in January and was not able to work ....she is back to work now and expects to pay March rent but she doesn't want to fall behind so PLEASE DONATE TO COVER RENT!

And thanks again to all the donors over Christmas!  The $4,000 plus that we have raised so far went to moving, furniture, appliances, and first month, and 1 month rent deposit. It would NOT have happened without all your donations!

Background (written last fall)
For a year, I have been supporting a lovable family of 7 in Englewood  -- a mom and 6 kids.  Each week I have been dropping off food, taking the kids to the YMCA for swimming and basketball and on adventures to the beach, museums, zoo, etc. I have also helped them get school supplies, clothes, glasses, furniture, appliances, birthday and Christmas gifts.  Many have donated (HUGE THANKS TO ALL!) and joined us on outings.  My partner helps by doing laundry weekly and assists with administrative paperwork.

This crisis is encroaching because the mother has serious health issues and has been hospitalized several times this year. Two years ago they had a fire and lost all their belongings -- and were evicted. This crisis is complex and it's time that Mom gets out from  under the intense pressure and starts getting help. The kids are very well behaved and need academic support  to succeed school.

I have called around the city, and local social services and learned there are no viable  public housing options (even waiting lists are closed!)  so I am raising money to ensure they can get into a warm and safe apartment immediately

Mom has a job as a McDonald's manager but she has a surgery coming up and will be unable to work at all for 6-8 weeks, and will only be able to work part-time for another month or two after she returns to work.

This is a chance to help these children and their mom directly.  This is a chance to change lives. Already our involvement has helped improve behavior, attendance, and brighten their spirits.  Now these kids need stability and security of a home.

We are looking to raise $15,000 for a years rent  (we have raised $3000 already and hope to cover utilities, and other necessities and unexpected expenses.)  so that we can move this family into a safe, and clean apartment and out of crisis.

Once we get this family safe in an apartment, I will work with mom to get more supports, better schools and tutors for the kids and look for a home that we can buy and fix up.  I invite you to join me in this hands-on work as well, if you are inclined. Please consider helping this family, or maybe you know someone that wants to help prevent kids from being homeless and hungry.
