Ellison was born on July 22 to Kendrick and Rebecca Mitchell.  Like all couples, they anticipated this as being a wonderful experience and getting to bring their baby boy home after a short hospital stay.  They had been given no reason to believe otherwise.  Ellison weighed 8lbs4oz and appeared to be just perfect.  He is such a beautiful baby!  Shortly after his birth he began to show signs of distress and was admitted to the NICU at Brookwood Hospital. He was put on a ventilator and paralytic drugs.  Ellison was initially diagnosed with pneumonia and pulmonary hypertension. In the early hours of the morning on Friday, July 28th, Ellison was transferred to Children’s of Alabama to be placed on ECMO, which the doctors hoped would allow his organs to strengthen and correct his other health conditions. At some point Friday, Ellison developed a dangerous blood clot in his aorta. The doctors presented the family with two treatment options: a medication called tPA, which is a strong blood thinner, or surgery on his aorta to remove the clot. Both treatments were described as having risks, but the doctor recommended starting with tPA, with surgery being a last resort. There has been a slight reduction in the size of the clot overnight and the medical team will continue to evaluate every few hours, but his condition is still extremely serious. Ellison is a very, very sick little boy, but he is such a fighter!

Rebecca is a social worker.  She hasn't been at her job very long and therefore can't apply for FMLA.  She worked her entire pregnancy and accrued some sick time and some comp time in order to have a short maternity leave with Ellison.  Ken's job doesn't offer sick leave.

This fund is being set up to help Rebecca and Ken be able to stay at a hotel near the hospital as long as Ellison is still in the NICU.  It will also help with meals, parking fees, medical bills, and hopefully allow her to be off work some when Ellison gets to come home.  Any left over money will be donated to Brookwood Hospital NICU.

Please give as you feel led.  If you are not in a position to donate financially, please just continue prayers for Ellison, Rebecca and Ken.
