Support Elliott's NICU Journey

Elliott Robert was born on August 8, 2018 at 9:07pm. Our handsome preemie was born at only 27 weeks and 5 days of gestation and weighed 2 pounds, 6 ounces. Elliott not only had a very early entrance to our world, but a difficult one. During the delivery, Elliott’s positioning resulted in a fractured humerus, femur, and clavicle; he also suffered severe bruising. Because the delivery was so immediate, Elliott’s mom was unable to get the necessary shots to help his lungs and prevent infection.

Being so young, Elliott’s kidneys are unable to break down the blood from his bruising on their own. Elliott has been under special lighting since his birth. Likewise, he was intubated to provide him the necessary medicine that his lungs needed to function and grow properly. Although initially on a CPAP, he is now on a ventilator with the hopes of transitioning back to the CPAP in the coming weeks. With IVs and a feeding tube, Elliott is now getting the nutrients he needs to begin the healing and growing process. As his fractures heal and his bruising dissipates, he will be allowed more time to cuddle with mom and dad.

Our young boy is a feisty little one who is showing personality and movement through all of his daily tests, x-rays, and medical equipment. When he receives his changings and has vitals checked, he is able to remove his eye shield (used to protect his eyes from the lighting) and he becomes wide eyed and alert. The doctors say that this is a good sign for Elliott’s progress.

Our family will be spending each day in the NICU while Elliott gets the care and supports he needs to gain strength. Over the next several months, Elliott’s mom will be taking a leave from work to both heal herself from unexpected complications and be with Elliott. This will result in our family losing one income for a portion of that time, and we will have to pay for much higher insurance premiums and medical bills.

It is our hope and goal for Elliott to be able to leave the hospital by the end of October. While we are all taking one day at a time, the good and the more difficult, we appreciate every moment of those helping Elliott at the University of Vermont Medical Center NICU. The nurses and doctors have been incredible. It is unimaginable the work they do, unless you have been in their presence. If we raise more than the necessary funds for Elliott’s care and family support, we will donate each additional dollar raised to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at UVMMC.

We will be posting updates on Elliott’s NICU journey on Instagram @elliottsnicustrong Please also feel free to share our story and link.

Thank you for giving in any way you can, whether that be physically, spiritually, emotionally, or financially. We are grateful for all of the support and love each day.

With the Deepest Thanks,
Brittany, Hayden, and Elliott
