Trauma Charlie a.k.a Ellie Handa
Shortly after midnight on Saturday, February 13th, Ellie Handa experienced a life changing event. Ellie was in a horrific car crash that has changed her life forever. After being contacted by the Ohio State Medical Center mom and dad headed to medical campus to support our daughter. When we arrived, after some confusion, we found “Trauma Charlie”. Trauma Charlie was the name in the computer system that the ER gave Ellie because they didn’t know her real name when she was brought in. Trauma Charlie was already in surgery when we arrived.
Ellie sustained devastating injuries to multiple parts of her body. She was rushed into surgery to repair her neck, back, and spinal cord. Damage to her brain is being monitored closely. At this point, Ellie has lost her mobile abilities (paralysis) and remains in the ICU under close supervision and on a ventilator. Ellie will require around the clock care for the foreseeable future with the hopes to one day walk again. Our hearts are broken for our Ellie.
Mom and dad would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of support for her. The Team at Ohio State Medical Center has been great. This has been a very challenging time for our family, and we are still in shock and grieving over the entire event. After seeing her injuries and evaluating the accident I can’t believe she is still with us. She is the toughest 17 your old I know! We are so proud of her! Keep after it Ellie!
The good news is we have insurance. The bad news is that insurance doesn’t cover everything. Injuries like this along with our promise to give Ellie the best opportunities to heal requires a great deal of money to make this change happen in such a short period of time. We need to move fast so we can get Ellie in the best rehab and prepping for a return home ASAP. Mom and dad will use any funds donated to support Ellie in her journey to one day walk again. It's our life's mission to see Ellie walk again and lead a normal life. We will need new vehicles, handicap accessible homes, rehabilitation visits, Ellie’s future personal needs, home nursing support, and the list goes on and on……
How can you help Ellie? Tell her how proud you are of her for still being here to smile and make us laugh. Celebrate her toughness with a hug next time you see her. Can I tell you again how incredibly proud we are of her?! Last week, Ellie was a Senior in High School, planned on attending the University of Cincinnati, and will turn 18 on February 22nd! This is still her Dream! Hopefully, she will defy all odds and get to pursue her Dreams! Can you remember when you were a Senior in High School? Our hearts are in pieces for our Ellie.
