Ellery's Life Changing Surgery

Donation protected
Ellery was born to Rick and Kailey Wingfield when Kailey was just 24 weeks pregnant.  She spent her first 99 days of life in NICU.  In her first 4 years of life, she has overcome more than most of us will encounter in our entire lives.  She’s been fighting the odds, and she’s winning!

Recently, Rick and Kailey have had to make some very important decisions regarding Ellery’s long term care.  Due to her Cerebral Palsy, Ellery has extreme spasticity in her leg and foot.  It’s causing the bones in her foot to malform.  Without treatment, she will be facing multiple orthopedic surgeries down the road with certainty.  Ellery has been selected as a candidate, and meets all of the criteria for a procedure called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR).  This surgery aims to take away the spasticity in Ellery’s leg and foot permanently, thus creating a better quality of life for her.  This decision was not taken lightly, nor made easily.  The surgery itself is intensive.  They will cut the nerve rootlets in her spinal column to take away the spasticity.  She will be in the hospital for approximately 2 weeks, and she’ll have a long and rough recovery when she gets home.

As their close friends, we would like to attempt to make this family’s life a little easier and possibly relieve some unwelcomed stress.  Beyond the immense physical and emotional struggle that they’re facing, is the tremendous financial aspect of it all.  The surgery itself is an expensive one.  Add to that missed work, travel expenses, hospital stay, and long-term recovery and therapy costs, and it all becomes a little overwhelming.  To us, it doesn’t matter exactly how the money is spent.  If it helps give this deserving family the opportunity to focus on life, it would be considered an appreciated success. If you are able to donate, we would be extremely grateful.  No donation is too small!

We appreciate you sharing this with your friends and loved ones.  Updates will be posted throughout Ellery’s newest journey.
