In July of 2015, Ellen was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a double mastectomy in August. In May of 2016, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and after 50 chemotherapy treatments, had a total hysterectomy. Post surgery, she had several more chemotherapy treatments and her numbers looked great. In August of 2017, her cancer returned with a vengenace. She has been unable to take anything by mouth since September and gets her nutrition through an IV bag. She is undergoing more chemotherapy of the most toxic kind.
Genetic testing was done for 26 different cancer markers and none were found. Her doctor referred her case to a company that has found that markers are within the tumor itself. The company tests the tumor and analyzes what therapy would work best. The cost of the initial test is $5,300.00. Ellen was advised that it can take months for health insurance to determine whether it will be covered. Months for a cancer patient can mean the difference between life and death.
I asked Ellen's permission to create this account and for those of you who know Ellen, you will not be surprised by her response. Ellen asked, "how do I pay people back?"
The funds received will enable Ellen to pay for the initial testing. We do not know what the recommendations will be or if there is a treatment that will help her. But, we do know, that without this chance to find out, her prospects are dim.
