Elizabeth Peratrovich Mural in Petersburg, Alaska

Our project celebrates Alaska Native civil rights hero Elizabeth Peratrovich with a public mural in the community of Petersburg, Alaska where she was born on July 4th, 1911.
Why Elizabeth Peratrovich?
A Tlingit woman and community organizer, Peratrovich is credited with testimony to the Alaska legislature that assured passage of Alaska's Anti-Discrimination Act of 1944. This civil rights legislation is nationally significant and preceded more commonly known civil rights laws by up to a decade. Her efforts are now honored with a state holiday and commemorative $1 coin to be released this year by the US Mint.
We will be unveiling our mural the same year as the coin is minted - during Petersburg's Little Norway Festival in May of 2020!
Many people, including other Alaska Native women from Petersburg, made essential contributions to the civil rights successes for which Peratrovich is celebrated. This amazing work continues to this day. In that spirit we intend this project to honor the often unseen hard work of all involved, especially local Alaska Native women.
The Mural
The Peratrovich Mural Project is a partnership between Petersburg Indian Association, Petersburg Arts Council, Petersburg ANS/ANB and others. It will be installed in downtown Petersburg on the large courthouse building. We are currently finalizing our design, but expect the installation to include a circular portrait of Peratrovich along with a mosaic surround featuring the work of student artists.
Our muralist is professional artist Janine Gibbons who also grew up in Petersburg. With Haida ancestry, Janine is a prolific painter and an illustrator for the acclaimed "Baby Raven Reads" children's books released by Sealaska Heritage Institute. Janine refurbished the People by the Water mural in downtown Petersburg in 2018, and also created art for the Petersburg Indian Association's new elder bus.
Our Fundraising Goal
This spring, we aim to raise $10,000+ for site prep, paints & supplies, artist time, an interpretive plaque, and to establish a maintenance fund as well as an accompanying website featuring civil rights history in Petersburg. Through initial fundraising, we already have $2500 donated or pledged! We hope to raise another $3,000 via crowdsourced fundraising this year with the remainder raised through grants, events, and merchandise sales.
Donations are tax deductible and are held in a dedicated fund through Petersburg Arts Council. Please contact us directly if you plan to make a major donation to our project. The gorgeous painting featured on this site is a portrait given to the Petersburg Indian Association by muralist Janine Gibbons, and is not the final mural for this project.
