We are Maria Chiara and Elena, two sisters of 25 and 21 from Italy, both wheelchair users.
We are raising money for two custom-made power wheelchairs (11.000 pounds for Maria Chiara and 15.000 pounds for Elena).
The only company that makes powerchairs that suit us completely, in every detail, is a small LTD company based in the UK. Their powerchairs are made in such a bespoke way and quality as we couldn’t find in no other company, in Italy or the UK.
Unfortunately, due to the incredibly bespoke nature of these chairs they have not received the CE mark approval. Of course the company owner is a qualified mechanical engineer and a trained programmer of powerchairs, and the chairs he builds use frame and other components which have been CE tested, as well as certified mobility controllers and power modules. The problem is that due to the massive modifications you can read about below, they have no CE marking, so he cannot sell them as “medical supplies”, but just as a personal transport devices. That’s why we aren’t able to claim anything back from the Italian healthcare system or apply for a grant, unfortunately, and that’s why we are making this appeal.
Now for some technical details: the really special thing about these powerchairs is that they are devised for two things that very rarely go together in the chairs from the manufacturers:
they allow an off-road use (giving a very smooth ride when going over cobbles, mud and grass, rough non paved areas and even some beaches), but are still reasonably small and very manoeuvrable for indoor use where every inch really matters. So they are truly indoor AND outdoor capable. It sounds like an easy, taken for granted thing to do, but for those of you who don’t know about the powerchairs’ market: apparently, it is not; companies have standard low quality products most of the time. The reality is that it is almost impossible to find powerchairs so “complete” and that don’t give you a bumpy ride every time you are not driving it in somewhere more uneven than a shopping mall. It’s fundamental for us to avoid a bumpy ride as much as possibile, as any bump could easily cause posture problems. With these chairs, unlike others, we are able to pass, if necessary, a step of 5-10 cm, without unbalancing too much.
We can also program the chairs ourselves to our exact requirements thanks to a software (for example putting them on “sports mode” to make them super-responsive). They are very speedy (13kph): being slower than that, as many are, makes crossing a busy road very dangerous.
Maria Chiara’s chair has also a power seat elevation (to see past counters and communicate comfortably with a person who is standing) and full recline option, plus a powered tilt-in-space facility that tilts a lot so that she can rest her back sometimes. A great thing is that the range of speeds is maintained even when tilted. This is essential for her, as she often needs to be slightly tilted while driving, to avoid fatigue and soreness, but this option is very rare to find in other powerchairs, and it is still not too big to get under a standard table, as most powerchairs are.
Elena’s chair is even better and more peculiar, being a super-technological little baby which will allow her to drive while lying down, with a cool, powered rotating mechanism so that she can pass through narrow doors and spaces. Finding a company willing and capable to build such a special powerchair following closely the project she conceived herself with no restrictions or red tape has not been an easy task. The process took us a whole six months what with endless appointments with companies, tests, (more or less useful) demos, much reasoning and a bit of despair – , and we consider ourselves very lucky to have found this company.
So we are asking for your help! The prices are considerable, and we won’t get any financial help for this. These are the only powerchairs which truly allow us not to make compromises of sorts when it comes to comfort, reliability and function.
We are asking friends and family to help but it won’t be enough as the amount is so high. We are relying on your generosity so any help you could offer by way of sharing on Facebook or making a donation, no matter how small, would be extremely important and precious. The independence and comfort we would gain are really invaluable.

Siamo Maria Chiara ed Elena, due sorelle di 25 e 21 anni. Siamo entrambe in carrozzina e stiamo facendo questa raccolta fondi per poter comprare due carrozzine elettriche molto personalizzate (11.000 sterline per Maria Chiara e 15.000 sterline per Elena).
L'unica ditta che produce carrozzine che fanno completamente al caso nostro, in ogni particolare, è una piccola ditta inglese. In nessun’altra azienda, né italiana né inglese, siamo riuscite a trovare carrozzine così adatte alle nostre esigenze, e di qualità.
Purtroppo, proprio perché sono così personalizzate, sono carrozzine che non hanno ricevuto la marcatura CE. Il costruttore, ovviamente, é un ingegnere meccanico qualificato e programmatore di carrozzine elettriche con esperienza, e le carrozzine che produce utilizzano strutture e componenti che hanno la marcatura CE, e anche i dispositivi e le batterie sono certificati. Il problema è che a causa delle modifiche massicce di cui potete leggere tra poco, non hanno ottenuto la marcatura CE, quindi non possono essere vendute come ausili medici, ma solo come mezzi di trasporto personale. Per questo, purtroppo, non possiamo farcene passare nemmeno una parte dall'ASL, né fare domanda per alcun sussidio, ed è per questo che abbiamo pensato di fare quest’appello.
E ora qualche dettaglio tecnico: la cosa veramente speciale di queste carrozzine è che sono concepite per due funzioni che è davvero difficile trovare insieme nella maggior parte delle carrozzine elettriche: hanno infatti un uso da “fuoristrada” (permettendo una guida “dolce” su tutti i tipi di terreno, ammortizzando gli scossoni dovuti a sanpietrini, fango e erba, terreni più accidentati, e persino certi tipi di sabbia) ma sono comunque abbastanza piccole e molto manovrabili negli interni, dove ogni centimetro è importante. Sono quindi carrozzine davvero “da interno” e “da esterno” allo stesso tempo. Sembrerebbe una cosa scontata e facile da trovare, ma chi conosce il mercato delle carrozzine elettriche sa quanto in realtà non lo sia; molte ditte hanno prodotti scadenti e troppo standardizzati. È quasi impossibile trovare carrozzine elettriche così "complete" e che non ti provochino tanti scossoni ogni volta che guidi in un terreno che non sia il pavimento di un centro commerciale.
Per noi è fondamentale evitare il più possibile qualunque tipo di scossone, che possono facilmente sbilanciarci la postura. Con queste carrozzine, a differenza di altre, riusciamo a oltrepassare, all'occorrenza, uno scalino di 5-10 centimetri, senza sbilanciarci troppo.
Possiamo anche programmare le carrozzine tramite un software per adattarle alle varie esigenze di guida, per esempio metterle in modalità "sport" per renderle più scattanti e reattive. Sono piuttosto veloci (13 km/h): avere una velocità minore – come è il caso di molte carrozzine elettriche – rende pericoloso, ad esempio, attraversare una grande strada molto trafficata.
La carrozzina di Maria Chiara ha anche un sistema di elevazione (per vedere oltre i banconi dei negozi, ed essere ad altezza occhi con chi sta in piedi). Inoltre si può reclinare completamente fino a raggiungere la posizione distesa, ed ha un sistema di basculamento che si inclina tantissimo all'indietro per far riposare la schiena. La velocità della carrozzina è mantenuta anche quando la bascula é attiva, cosa essenziale per lei, perché ha spesso bisogno di stare leggermente basculata mentre guida, per evitare stanchezza e indolenzimento (nelle altre carrozzine di solito con la bascula attiva la velocità viene diminuita automaticamente). Tutta la struttura è comunque abbastanza piccola da permetterle di stare con le gambe sotto un tavolo, caratteristica non facile da trovare nelle carrozzine in commercio.
La carrozzina di Elena è anche meglio e ancora più particolare. È un gioiellino super-tecnologico, con cui potrà muoversi stando distesa, e avrà un fantastico meccanismo di rotazione per poter passare nelle porte o attraverso spazi stretti. Trovare una ditta disposta a costruire una carrozzina così particolare, seguendo passo passo l'idea progettata da Elena senza vincoli o restrizioni burocratiche, non è stato facile. Ci sono voluti ben sei mesi, tra svariati appuntamenti con le ditte, prove dimostrative più o meno utili, molto ragionamento e un po' di disperazione, e ci riteniamo molto fortunate ad aver trovato questa ditta.
Chiediamo quindi il vostro aiuto! I prezzi sono considerevoli, e non essendo carrozzine classificate come “ausili” non possiamo avere rimborsi. Si tratta delle uniche carrozzine che ci permettono davvero di evitare compromessi per quanto riguarda comfort, affidabilità e funzionalità.
Stiamo chiedendo a parenti e amici di contribuire, ma basterà a coprire solo una piccola parte dell'intera cifra, che è molto alta, quindi ci affidiamo alla vostra generosità. Qualunque tipo di sostegno, che sia una semplice condivisione su Facebook o una donazione, anche piccolissima, sarà essenziale e prezioso.
