Louise's Story

This request is for my friend, Louise. Louise is a long-term resident in a nursing home in South Jersey (USA) and has suffered from Cerebral palsy since childhood. She has been confined to a wheelchair since that time. I first met Louise when my mother entered the same facility a short time ago. She lives on the same floor in this facility as my mother. We quickly became very good friends. Louise has a great spirit and a loving nature despite her physical handicap.

It was not long after making her acquaintance that we noticed that Louise did not have a powered wheelchair. Her present wheelchair is manually operated. She had difficulty getting around the facility. Due to the Cerebral palsy, Louise does not have sufficient strength in either of her arms to independently move herself around the facility. This made her completely reliant upon the staff in the facility to push her from place to place, which was  not always convenient. When I asked her if she thought about getting a powered wheelchair, Louise told me that she was a Medicaid patient and her financial resources were extremely limited. She also told me that her family situation didn't make it possible for relatives to help.

How You Can Help
A powered wheelchair would be a tremendous benefit for Louise. It would enable her to move around her 'home' independently. It would also enable her to overcome obstacles that make it difficult to use the  transportation services that are available to her. The funds raised in this campaign would be used to purchase a used powered wheelchair (many are available on Craigslist) and immediately replace the batteries with new ones. Once funding is raised, I will buy the chair and deliver it to her.

Estimated Expenses for Louise
An estimate of campaign spending would be:

$1000 - 1500    purchase a good used wheelchair
$500                       battery replacement. if less than $500.
the excess would be held to replace
batteries when the new ones wear out.
Louise is about 50 years old and has lots
                                   of living to do.

Thanks for your consideration of a powered wheelchair for Louise. It will greatly improve her quality of life! Thank you for reading and for your consideration.
