ELMER BATTLES CANCER
Elmer Courchene is a nationally recognized and respected First Nations Elder across Canada. He sits as the Chairman of the Elders Council at the Assembly of First Nations. He has dedicated most of his life to championing First Nation causes.
And he has always taken the time to speak with all who seek his experience and wisdom - from the youth to the elders - about their concerns and worries. He has tried to bring their issues to the attention of the Executive of the Assembly of First Nations and all our Chiefs. He has been an early advocate for the treatment of First Nations women and girls.
Elmer was diagnosed with lung cancer and is currently undergoing further tests to determine his treatment regimen. The doctors have already told him that he will require chemotherapy and radiation treatments. There is also the possibility of surgical procedures that would prove very dangerous in their outcome and lengthy in their recovery period.
He is eighty-two years old and lives alone in his private home that he maintains without assistance on the north shore of the Sagkeeng First Nation. Elmer's is not a paid position at the Assembly of First Nations and he is dependent upon attending meetings across the country to receive honoraria for his contributions. This type of travel will at a minimum be disrupted while he undergoes treatment and recovery.
We are looking for contributions to offset Elmer's living expenses while he undergoes treatment and recovery. He also requires to supplement home care and other treatment related costs. This would help relieve a huge burden of worry while he fights his battle with cancer. As a respected Elder he should be enabled to live with dignity.
