Mutual Aid for MacArthur Park Vendors &Workers‼️

Hello!

We set up this page to collect funds for mutual aid that will be directly distributed to street vendors and laborers located in MacArthur Park.

As we know, currently, ICE has been targeting the most vulnerable and hard-working individuals in our communities, subjecting them to fear, violence, and financial hardship. Many vendors are unable to work due to fears of being kidnapped, and others continue to work out of fear of further economic instability.

For years, my compañero has worked with the community of street vendors and has established strong bonds with vendors in the Westlake region. Over the past years, they have worked with the vending community to speak up to City officials about the constant harassment faced by the community from the police and the marginalization the community has faced (media above-marches from 2023). By supporting them in obtaining permits to vend and guiding them to other resources in the area, the ever-present need for economic stability becomes much more pronounced.

Beginning in March this year, hostile fences surrounding the park on Alvarado, 6th, and 7th were put up by the mayor's orders as a method of "public safety". This action heavily affected many vendors' sales, displacing dozens of street vendors and impacting the foot traffic needed for small local businesses in the area. With the reduced commerce affected by the fences, street vendors were making as little as $20 a day, $30 a weekend, and business sales have dropped an average of 1k a month.

*Besides the impact of a decrease in foot traffic in the area, there have been multiple instances of community members tripping/hurting themselves due to these fences. Under current circumstances, many fear being corralled by ICE in the small pedestrian walking space next to the fences, as these barriers have already opened vendors and small businesses to be surveilled more heavily by the police.

We currently have a communication line with 80+ vendors where we have been providing OTG rapid response. For the past months, we have begun the process of forming mutual cooperatives with the vendors to combat the gentrification of MacArthur Park, as many are being kicked out of their lots and spaces to vend, and many are being forced out of the community. Current kidnappings of business owners and vendors exacerbate this ever-present battle of gentrification, kicking out brown bodies out of Los Angeles.

To take time off work is a privilege many vendors/workers do not have. No one should have to risk their livelihoods, especially during these moments. Migrant families, parents, grandparents, and children deserve our economic solidarity.

Donating to this GFM would allow us to give aid with rent, bills, food, and hopefully take some stress/fear off our neighbors. As we know, ICE is very present, affecting many communities emotionally, physically - many are in need of DIRECT monetary aid.

Creamos esta página para recaudar fondos de ayuda mutua que se distribuirán directamente a vendedores ambulantes y trabajadores del Parque MacArthur.

Como sabemos, actualmente, ICE ha estado atacando a las personas más vulnerables y trabajadoras de nuestras comunidades, sometiéndolas al miedo, la violencia y las dificultades económicas. Muchos vendedores no pueden trabajar por temor a ser secuestrados, y otros continúan trabajando por temor a una mayor inestabilidad económica.

Durante años, mi compañero ha trabajado con la comunidad de vendedores ambulantes y ha forjado fuertes vínculos con ellos en la región de Westlake. En los últimos años, ha trabajado con la comunidad de vendedores para denunciar ante los funcionarios municipales el acoso constante que enfrenta la comunidad por parte de la policía y la marginación que ha sufrido (medios de comunicación arriba: marchas de 2023). Al apoyarlos en la obtención de permisos para vender y guiarlos hacia otros recursos en la zona, la necesidad constante de estabilidad económica se hace mucho más evidente.

A partir de marzo de este año, por orden del alcalde, se instalaron cercas hostiles alrededor del parque en las calles Alvarado, 6 y 7 como medida de "seguridad pública". Esta acción afectó gravemente las ventas de muchos vendedores, desplazando a docenas de vendedores ambulantes y afectando la afluencia de personas que necesitan los pequeños negocios locales de la zona. Con la reducción del comercio debido a las cercas, los vendedores ambulantes ganaban tan solo $20 al día, $30 los fines de semana, y las ventas de los negocios han disminuido un promedio de mil dólares al mes.

*Además del impacto de la disminución de la afluencia de personas en la zona, se han registrado múltiples casos de miembros de la comunidad que han tropezado o se han lesionado debido a estas cercas. En las circunstancias actuales, muchos temen ser acorralados por ICE en el pequeño espacio peatonal junto a las cercas, ya que estas barreras ya han expuesto a vendedores y pequeños negocios a una mayor vigilancia policial.

Actualmente contamos con una línea de comunicación con más de 80 vendedores, donde hemos estado brindando respuesta rápida de OTG. Durante los últimos meses, hemos iniciado el proceso de formar cooperativas mutuas con los vendedores para combatir la gentrificación del Parque MacArthur, ya que muchos están siendo expulsados ​​de sus terrenos y espacios para vender, y muchos se ven obligados a abandonar la comunidad. Los secuestros actuales de dueños de negocios y vendedores exacerban esta constante lucha contra la gentrificación, expulsando a la población de color de Los Ángeles.
