My name is Melissa , my husband Toby & I have been married for 15 years . We have 5 children Matthew 21, Brandon 16, Ryan 13, Nate 7 & finally our princess Ms. Cali Rose 2. I am a RN, my husband is a deputy sheriff. After the birth of our daughter life couldn't have been better. I truly felt like the luckiest person alive I was married to my best friend , we had 5 healthy , beautiful kids & our careers were on track. On Aug. 20th 2014 everything changed. Initially I thought I just had a stomach virus , by the 24th I was admitted to the hospital with an intestinal infection I initially spent 8 days in the hospital & was referred to a specialist in Tampa. I went to see him & was subsequently admitted to the hospital in St.Pete. I was admitted Sept 7th 2014 with  no clue I would not be going home until October 18th 2014. They attempted to treat the infection with antibiotics , but I developed toxic megacolon & had to undergo emergency surgery to save my life. I was told the infection initiated an ulcerative colitis & or Crohn's disease. Since then I have had repeated hospitalizations. I now have an ileostomy , and suffer from a multitude of gastrointestinal issues. I have had many blood transfusions & basically live day to day based on how I'm feeling. Currently I get an Iv infusion called Remicaide to help control my symptoms. This infusion costs $4-6,000 an infusion every 8 weeks . My dr has recommended the dose be doubled & I receive it every 4 weeks, but my insurance is refusing to pay. We have spent all of our savings & are depending on one income to make ends meet. I don't know when I will be able to return to work  or if my nursing career is over as remicaide makes you very susceptible to illness & I can't be around anyone who is sick. Which I think is one of the most heartbreaking aspects of all of this . I love being a nurse & I worked so hard to get there. I am also facing at least 1 if not 2 more major surgeries & may need to have my colon removed.  My family & I truly appreciate every little bit of help & all the prayers & kind words have helped us get this far, but we have a long & unsure road ahead. We are just thankful I am here today as things have been touch & go a few times.
