My name is Courtney, and I'm 35 years old. A few years ago I was a healthy single Mom who was working full time and coaching gymnastics on the side. I started having medical problems which quickly progressed into very serious issues. I ended up in respiratory failure, kidney failure, and liver failure last year. The doctors were unable to determine why this happened. While on a breathing machine, the hospital called my parents and my son (who is now 15 and a pain in my you know what lol) in to say goodbye to me and told them there was nothing more they could do. Somehow, I pulled through that, but I have permanent lung damage.
I am currently in limbo with no diagnosis and my health continues to deteriorate at a pretty rapid rate. I was told I most likely have Systemic lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis, but it is not a confirmed diagnosis. The doctors did determine that my immune system is not functioning properly, so I catch anything and everything and it turns into a severe infection quickly. Generally I spend about 10 months out of each year sick.
My doctors are out of ideas and now want to send me to the top respiratory hospital in the US - National Jewish Health in Denver, CO. There they will run tests for seven days... basically "Dr. House" me and come up with the correct diagnois (I hope) and treatment plan before it's too late. Unfortuately, because of my battle and mounds of medical bills over the past few years, I (and my parents whom I had been borrowing from) are out of moola! My job fired me when I became sick, so my income is very limited.
I am hoping to raise some funds to get myself to Colorado! Through it all, I try to stay positive and laugh at it as much as I can. My friends and family have been an amazing support system and keep me sane through all of this. I requested financial assistance through my insurance to help cover the cost of the travel, but I was denied. I am trying to raise money to help pay for the plane tickets, hotel cost, food, and hospital costs. I hate hate hate asking for help, but sometimes we have to swallow our pride.
