Dr. Eithne Walls was Senior House Officer in Ophthalmology at The Royal Victoria Eye & Ear Hospital Dublin.
The ill-fated flight AF447 carrying Eithne and her friends, Dr. Aisling Butler and Dr. Jane Deasy disappeared over the Atlantic on 1st June 2009.
The Eithne Walls Research Fund, established by Eithne’s family, provides much needed support for the work of the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Research Foundation and keeps the memory of Eithne very much alive in a way she would have approved of – supporting research for the prevention and treatment of eye and ear disease.
Each year, the Research Foundation holds the Eithne Walls Research Meeting. Trainee doctors are given the opportunity to present their work to their peers. This is key to continuing our work to advance education and development. Trainees who participate have the opportunity to be awarded the Eithne Walls Research Medal.
It means a great deal to us to remember Eithne and her friends every year, and we were delighted to be able to be part of the first virtual VHI Women's Mini Marathon in 2020. Congratulations to everyone who took part and well done to our friends in the VHI Women's Mini Marathon for creating such a successful and inclusive event online in such challenging circumstances.
We are doing it again this year, and registration is open for the 2021 VHI Women's Mini Marathon #PowerOfMe on the 19th September 2021.
