<div>In April, Eira, a happy and healthy 2.5 yr old fell suddenly and severely ill. What started as a normal Saturday with a simple cold quickly spiralled into every parent’s worst nightmare. By that afternoon, Eira had spiked a dangerously high temperature, began vomiting, and her eyes were rolling back – she was rushed to A&amp;E

<div>At the hospital, doctors worked frantically to stabilise Eira as she suffered multiple seizures and became unresponsive. Eira was sedated and put on a ventilator. She was moved to the intensive care unit in Cardiff, an MRI scan soon revealed the devastating cause: a rare condition called acute necrotising encephalitis – a severe inflammation in her brain triggered by the viral infection. The swelling caused significant brain injury. That’s when Becca and Phil were told, gently, to prepare for the worst – Eira had “little to no chance of survival.”

<div>On Wednesday 16th April, a day they will never forget they were sat down and told “Eira was no longer with us, and that the machines were keeping her alive”
</div>
<div>At 3:18pm surrounded by her family her ventilator was turned off. But Eira had other plans. That beautiful, brave little girl defied all odds and refused to give up. Even after doctors told us to say our goodbyes and removed her from life support, Eira kept fighting and she continued to breathe on her own.

<div>Eira has continued to fight, and against all expectations, she is still with us today.

<div>Eira was transferred to Ty Hafan Children’s Hospice for palliative care. Ty Hafan offered an incredible space for her outside the ICU, giving the family a more comforting environment to be together including Eira’s baby sister Angharad. The hospice staff have gone above and beyond to care for Eira and to make sure the family could stay by her side throughout. This has allowed them to focus on loving and comforting Eira every moment, instead of just managing medical crises. We truly believe this environment has given her the best possible chance to keep fighting.

<div>Eira continues to fight, every single day. Every tiny sign of progress – a gentle squeeze of our hand – is a miracle. She has a long road ahead, but she has already come further than anyone imagined. We know that when Eira can finally come home, she will have lasting brain damage. Our cheeky, wicked toddler will likely face serious neurological challenges and need specialised care for the rest of her life. It will be a “different” Eira who comes home – but she will still be our Eira, and we will embrace her and whatever the future holds, with all the love in the world.

The costs associated with caring for Eira are mounting – from not working, living costs, and travelling to specialist appointments, to modifying their home and buying equipment to meet her needs.

Her family is determined to face whatever comes next with hope, and they cherish every second they get to spend with their beautiful girl.
