<div>Mein Name ist Anika (35), ich bin die Mama von Rosalie (8) und Heidi (2). Komplett sind wir aber erst mit unserem Papa, Christopher (33). Wenn er nicht wäre, dann wäre unsere Welt einsam und klein.

<div>Ich weiß nicht, ob ich die richtigen Worte finde, um zu beschreiben, was passiert ist. Es gibt kein Wort für den Gefühlszustand, in dem wir uns gerade befinden, vor allem aber kein Wort für den Zustand, in dem Chris sich bewegt. Es ist ein Gefühl der Ausweglosigkeit und Leere.

<div>Wir waren gerade dabei uns mit eigener Muskelkraft den Traum vom eigenen Heim zu erfüllen, als ein falscher Handgriff, die <strong>Mauern unseres</strong> weiteren <strong>Lebens zum Einsturz brachte</strong>. Chris hatte schon so viele Stunden auf dem Grundstück verbracht, wo am Ende unser Heim stehen sollte. Der Abriss des alten Hauses schritt u.a. durch die Hilfe aus der Nachbarschaft aber auch geschlossenen Bekanntschaften gut voran. Dafür sind wir sehr dankbar.

<div>Am 06. April sagten wir uns morgens noch "auf wiedersehen", "bis nachher". Ich sagte ihm, dass ich am Nachmittag mit Heidi vorbeikommen würde, um ihn abzuholen. Noch ein Kuss an mich und die Kinder und dann fuhr er los. Er setzte am Nachmittag die Abrissarbeiten am Mauerwerk fort. Vorher war er noch im Gespräch mit dem Nachbar und nahm danach den Abrisshammer zur Hand. Alles wie immer. Doch dieses mal verselbständigte sich die teilweise noch stehende Mauer und brach über Chris zusammen. Er fiel auf ein altes aus dem Boden herausragendes Rohr. Er konnte nicht um Hilfe ringen und so begannen die bangen Minuten bis der Nachbar ihn auf seiner Gassi-Runde fand.

<div>Als ich mit Heidi am Grundstück ankam, war Chris bereits von Rettungskräften umzingelt. Ich konnte nicht zu ihm. Ich weiß noch, dass er von Feuerwehrkräften geborgen werden musste und wegen der Metallstange nicht transportfähig war, um ihn mit dem Hubschrauber ins Krankenhaus zu fliegen, der in unmittelbarer Nähe des Grundstücks gelandet war. Während er im Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin Marzahn notoperiert wurde, verbrachte ich die Nacht im Auto vor dem Krankenhaus. Ich hatte mich mit seinem Pullover zugedeckt, ich hatte Angst. Um 2 Uhr erreichte mich die erste Diagnose. Ich saß vor dem Arzt und sank in mir zusammen. Chris hatte diesen Unfall überlebt. Das war die gute Nachricht. Aber das Rohr hatte den 6. und 7. Halswirbel getroffen und sein Rückenmark durchtrennt. Chris ist von der Brust abwärts <strong>querschnittsgelähmt.</strong>

<div>Seit dem Unfall liegt er auf der Intensivstation. Ich begleite ihn jeden Tag viele Stunden durch die schwerste Zeit seines Lebens. Wir weinen gemeinsam und fragen uns, wie es weitergehen soll. Oft sagen wir auch einfach gar nichts. Da er auf Grund eines Luftröhrenschnitts noch über eine Trachealkanüle beatmet wird, können wir die meiste Zeit gar nicht reden, da die Funktion der Stimmbänder dadurch ausgesetzt wird. Ich lese ihm von den Lippen ab oder über eine Buchstabentafel.

<div>Chris ist der aktivste und pflichtbewussteste Mensch, den ich kenne. Seine Kollegen und Kolleginnen auf der Arbeit werden das sicher bestätigen. Er ist jeden Tag mit dem Fahrrad zur Arbeit in die Charité / Deutsches Rheumaforschungszentrum gefahren (25km pro Strecke) und hat Rosalie zusätzlich mit dem Fahrrad vom Training abgeholt. Wenn die Kinder abends im Bett waren, dann war Chris nicht der Typ, der auf dem Sofa die Beine hochgelegt hat. Chris ist so sehr in seiner Arbeit für Wissenschaft und Forschung aufgegangen, dass er seine Abende meistens der Arbeit widmete. Das soll jetzt alles nicht mehr möglich sein?

<div>Wir müssen den Einstieg in unser neues Leben schaffen. Wir müssen unsere Wohnsituation verändern und möchten so gerne den Bau des Hauses als Chance nutzen, um Chris ein barrierefreies Zuhause zu schaffen und unsere Träume nicht wie eine große Seifenblase platzen lassen.

<div>Wir benötigen leider sehr viel Unterstützung, um diesen Traum zu erfüllen. Unsere Einkommenssituation ändert sich durch den Unfall. Wir müssen das Haus abreißen, Erdarbeiten durchführen und das neue Haus bauen lassen. Es ist alles fertig geplant, der Bauantrag steht in den Startlöchern. Alles ist vorbereitet. Bitte helft Chris, helft ihm und uns den Schritt in die Zukunft leichter zu machen und dieses notwendige Zuhause zu erschaffen.

<div>I don’t know if I can find the right words to describe what has happened. There is no word for the emotional state we are in right now, but above all, there is no word for the state Chris is in. It’s a feeling of hopelessness and emptiness.

<div>We were just about to fulfill our dream of owning our own home with our own muscle power when one wrong move brought the walls of our future life crashing down. Chris had already spent so many hours on the spot where our home would eventually stand. The demolition of the old house progressed well thanks to help from the neighborhood as well as closed acquaintances. We are very grateful for this.

<div>On April 6, we said “goodbye” in the morning and “see you later”. I told him that I would come by with Heidi in the afternoon to pick him up. Another kiss to me and the children and then he drove off. He continued the demolition work on the brickwork in the afternoon. Before that, he had a talk with the neighbor and then picked up the demolition hammer. Everything as usual. But this time the wall, which was still partially standing, took on a life of its own and collapsed on top of Chris. He fell onto an old pipe sticking out of the ground. He couldn’t fight for help, and so the anxious minutes began until the neighbor found him on his walk.

<div>When I arrived at the property with Heidi, Chris was already surrounded by rescuers. I couldn’t get to him. I remember that he had to be rescued by firefighters and was unable to be transported because of the metal pole, so that he could be flown to the hospital by helicopter, which had landed very close to the property. While he underwent emergency surgery at the Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin Marzahn, I spent the night in the car outside the hospital. I had covered myself with his sweater; I was scared. The first diagnosis reached me at 2 am. I sat in front of the doctor and sank into myself. Chris had survived the accident. That was the good news. But the pipe had hit the 6th and 7th cervical vertebrae and severed his spinal cord. Chris is paraplegic from the chest down.

<div>He has been in intensive care since the accident. I accompany him for many hours every day through the most difficult time of his life. We cry together and ask ourselves how things should go on. Often we simply say nothing at all. As he is still being ventilated via a tracheostomy tube due to a tracheotomy, we can’t talk most of the time, as this stops his vocal cords from working. I read his lips or read from a letter board.

<div>Chris is the most active and conscientious person I know. I’m sure his colleagues at work will confirm that. He cycled to work at the Charité / German Rheumatism Research Center every day (25 km each way) and also picked Rosalie up from training by bike. When the children were in bed at night, Chris wasn’t the one who would put his feet up on the sofa. Chris was so absorbed in his work for science and research that he usually devoted his evenings to work. Is all that no longer possible?

<div>We have to get started in our new life. We have to change our living situation and would like to use the construction of the house as an opportunity to create a barrier-free home for Chris and not let our dreams burst like a big bubble.

<div>Unfortunately, we need a lot of support to make this dream come true. Our income situation has changed as a result of the accident. We have to demolish the house, carry out earthworks, and have the new house built. Everything has been planned, and the building application is in the starting blocks. Everything is ready. Please help Chris, help him and us to make the step into the future easier and to create this necessary home.
