Eileen Ahern's Medical Fund

Mommy, Eileen Ahern, has been diagnosed with stomach cancer. She has been very uncomfortable for most of the summer and fall. The diagnosis came early August from the experienced doctors at Jefferson Hospital.
If you have had the pleasure of knowing our mother, you are aware that she is a very private person so we will try to paint the picture delicately.

We thought that there was only 1 tumor in her stomach.
A surgery to remove that tumor was unsucessful because we found out that the situation is more advanced with cancer in the lining of her abdomen. Mommy did have a stomach bypass surgery and was released with the intention that a chemo plan would start soon.
That recovery has been painful to say the least. Her stomach is not exactly cooperating which has her in the hospital again. Today's PET scan had to be cancelled and she is having multiple tests done.

(I am freaking out in Alaska --doing this is the only thing I can think of -- and Kelly has taken time off of work to go be with her and write most of this story. Yeah, we are losing it!)

We have obviously had a few set backs and are waiting for a plan for chemotherapy but we have to get her stomach working properly first.

We know so many of you out there have been through or know someone who has had this brutal disease and understand its complexity. The doctors instructions are that she needs to get healthy---able to eat and drink---before chemo.

Our plan for the funds raised will go to anything not covered by insurance or co-pays that are astronomical. We would also use the money to help with gas and parking fees as Jefferson University Hospital is in Center City, Philadelphia. It is also in our minds that she would want to see her "grandbabies" who live in Alaska. More importantly, we would love to say to our Mother, "Hey Mom, you've helped and inspired so many people along the way...look how we all stick together!"

We know the bar is set high at $10,000 but this will be an on going campaign as she is down but not out of this long fight!

Eileen was a single mom while raising us. She worked 2 jobs usually 6-7 days a week to provide a reputable life for her girls. She always found the fun in life and shared it with us and our friends growing up.
That is why it is so important for us to do everything we can to help her now!  (I'm rambling on, thanks for reading this.)

Lastly, we encourage you to never take a day for granted and to live life to the fullest. There is nothing more important than family.

Very respectfully,

Kelly and Melissa
