For more background info about how I met Ehmet and Sohar and why I feel close to them:
Meet Ehmet and Sohar, a muslim couple from Syria I met at the now defunct Idomeni refugee camp in northern Greece on the Macedonian border. I went to volunteer at Idomeni because I am the granddaughter of holocaust survivors, and because my family knows about closed borders, disgraceful living conditions, and the indifference of the world. Is the situation in Idomeni the same as it was for my grandparents? Of course not. But do I need it to be the same in order to wake up the humanity in me? I hope not. Or, put differently, are we Jews today the same as all those who once said about us- I have nothing to do with those people, I dont even like those people, why should I help them? I say no, we are not. Ehmet and Sohar are living in a tent that they keep spick and span. After a long day of passing out bottles of fresh water and manning a mobile phone recharging station, I passed by their tent. They insisted on inviting me for coffee, even though they have almost nothing. I sat down and they told me their story. I then told them mine. "We love Jewish!" they exclaimed, "Jewish people are great. When you are in a crisis you care about each other and that is why we love the Jewish people!" That is a beautiful thought, and we Jews have indeed learned to look after one another in an often cruel and indifferent world. But if we ever expect others to behave towards us with care and dignity when necessary, we owe it to ourselves to behave that way towards others.
