Send Ben to Lourdes, France

On August 7, 2014, my father in law, Benjamin “Cham” Climaco, was the victim of a terrible car accident on the Loudoun County Parkway. He was struck by an 18 year old driving a $60,000 BMW traveling at speeds in excess of 100 MPH.

After Ben’s minivan rolled three times before coming to rest upside-down, by some miracle, and the skills of the doctors at INOVA Fairfax, he survived. He still has months of rehab to gain the strength to walk and breathe on his own before he can return to his regular life with his wife, three daughters, and seven grandchildren.

Ben came to the USA in the early 1970's from the Philippines. He worked very hard, and saved money his entire life to have it all taken away by this horrific and senseless accident. He has been a responsible member of the community, as well as a volunteer at his church. He has also supported several family members and friends both here and in the Philippines.

Ben is a two-time cancer survivor, and this is what leads me to my fundraising goal. When Ben beat cancer for the second time earlier this year, he planned a pilgrimage to Lourdes, France to give thanks. Lourdes has become a major place of Roman Catholic pilgrimage and of miraculous healings.  Ben would be in Lourdes right now, if it was not for this terrible accident.

Now that it seems that Ben will survive his latest challenge, I would like to help him make the pilgrimage to Lourdes. I am personally not a religious person, but Ben is. He gives his thanks and recovery to God. His ability to survive cancer twice, and then this horrific accident, is giving me a reason to rethink my views. Perhaps he knows something that I do not.

We hope that Medicare will cover most of the medical bills incurred by the accident; though there are still many expenses that will never be reimbursed. The accident has been a huge drain on Ben's savings.

I do not want Ben to give up on his dream of visiting Lourdes to give thanks to God for giving him the strength to survive.

Please help me raise $60,000, the value of the BMW that struck Ben at speeds in excess of 100 MPH, so that we can cover some of the expenses including: replacing the completely totaled car, the non-reimbursed medical, rehab, and living expenses, and then send Ben and his wife on his pilgrimage to Lourdes, France. His wife has been instrumental in his recovery as his “private” nurse, spending most days and nights in the Trauma ICU at the hospital, the rehab hospital and then ultimately at home.
