Chicago Beauty Supply Store Looted & Burned Down

Hello, my name is Linda Yoon, and I am setting up this Gofundme fundraiser for my uncle’s family (the Shin’s). The news of my uncle’s Beauty Supply Store in Chicago is utterly shocking and devastating as their store was looted and burned down on late Sunday afternoon, May 31, 2020.
 
My uncle and aunt were so excited at the notion of opening up their store after the three-month closure from the Covid-19 pandemic. Up to a week before the looting started, they were at the store stocking up on inventory, ready to get back to work. And the evening when the looting happened, they helplessly witnessed their store being looted, destroyed, and lit on fire from a distance - watching their business, retirement, and part of their souls being burned to the ground. They worked so hard with blood, sweat and tears involved, with my uncle rarely taking a day off from work even on holidays. Their business meant so much to them, as it was their joy, passion, and pride. I have personally never met a more harder working person than my uncle and thereby, it is heart wrenching to see my innocent uncle and aunt as unfortunate victims of losing their business in entirety. 

My uncle and aunt are in their mid-60s, and are financially unable to start over again nor able to afford to retire. They depended on selling their business as their retirement, but how could they sell their business when their store has been reduced to ashes? Unlike chained businesses, their small business insurance does not cover stolen goods and damages caused by rioters/looters. All the stolen goods were worth about $450K+ dollars of merchandise, and with the store’s equipment, their business was worth about $550K+.

We humbly ask you for your support, no matter how small, in rebuilding the Shin’s family’s livelihood. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, and we pray for God’s blessing to all of us during these turbulent times. We stand by George Floyd, his family, and everyone seeking change for the better.

1. How is the campaign organizer related to the intended recipient of the funds: 

Julie Shin is the Small Business Owner's daughter of Value Beauty Supply at 2357 E. 75th St., Chicago, IL 60649. 

2. How will the funds be used for this campaign?

The funds will be used to possibly rebuild a smaller business for the purchase of equipment (computers, glass cases/displays, shelves, printers, cash registers, and security system), merchandise, and deposit of a new lease as the entire building will have to be rebuilt. The entire store, with all the merchandise and equipment in it, was looted and/or damaged by the fire.

3. Is the intended recipient in control of the withdrawals? If not, is there a clear path for the funds to reach them? 

All funds will be directly deposited to Julie Shin’s parents’ (Sam Shin and Lan Shin) account.

이번 폭동으로인해 부모님이 십수년간 열심히 일궈온 삶의터전이 무너져버렸습니다. 늘 그렇듯 평화로운 일요일오후, 친구에게 전화가와서 빨리 부모님께 연락드려라 지금 그쪽에 사람들이 몰려와서 물건을갖고 도망가고있다는 소식을듣고 부모님께 바로 전화했고 다행히도 지금 차타고 가는중이라고하셨습니다. 그러나 곧 알람회사에서 알람이 여기저기서 울리고있다는 연락을 받으셨고 또다른지인분도 차타고 지나가는길에 사람들이 부모님가게 문을 부시고 창문을깨고있다는 연락을 받으셨어요. 제가 위험하니 절대 가지말라고 극구 말렸음에도 아버지는 허겁지겁 차를돌려 가게쪽으로 가셨습니다. 그리고 멀리서 30-40명 되는 폭도들이 가게를 부수고 물건을 날라가는 광경을 지켜보셨죠 아무것도 할수없음에 갈기갈기 찢어지는마음으로 집에 돌아오실수밖에없었습니다. 여러차례 911에 전화했지만 결국 경찰은 오지않았습니다. 다음날 아침 뉴스를 통해 화재가난걸알았고 직접가서보니 도저히 복구가 불가능할정도로 가게안은 다 타버리고 망가졌습니다. 너무 충격을 받으셨는지 울지도않으시고 아무말없이 넋나간 표정으로 계시다가 잠도 제대로 못주무시고계십니다. 보통 소규모비지니스들은 도둑질정도만 커버 받을수있도록 탄탄하게 보험을 들지 않습니다. 특히 폭동이나 화재같은경우는 옵션이기때문에 커버받기도힘들고 받더라도 물건값의 반도 받기 희박하구요 ㅠ 차라리 불이라도안났음했는데 이런일은 뉴스나 영화에서만 보던거라 처음엔 현실적으로 와닿지않더라구요. 부모님은 자기 자식처럼 이곳에 애정도 많이 쏟아붓고 매일매일 열심히 일만하셨습니다. 특히 이번엔 코로나로인해 가게를 몇달 닫고있었고 다시 재오픈할수있다는말에 물건 오더도많이하시고 열심히 정리하고 계셨는데 그물건들을 판매하기도전에 다 약탈당하고 하루아침에 모든걸 잃었으니 너무 마음이 아픕니다. 어떤말로도 위로가 안되겠지만 그래도 하나 희망이 있다면 크리스천으로서 하나님이 주시는 고난에서 얻어지는 소중한 메세지가 있을거라는 확신이 들더군요. 그걸 믿고 주님만 따라가면 된다고 생각하니 최악은 아닌거같은 생각이 들었습니다 항상 최선의것을 주시는 분이시니까요. 이런와중에 저와 동갑내기 사촌이 소식을듣고 안타까웠는지 고펀드미라는 사이트에 부모님을위해 기부캠페인을 오픈했습니다. 일하실날만 손꼽아 기다리셨던 부모님이 이제 갈곳은없어졌지만 조금이나마 힘을 보태드리고싶어 이렇게 쉐어합니다. 기부가 아니더라도 쉐어해주시고 함께 기도해주세요. 감사합니다.
