<div>Voor veel mensen is naar buiten gaan vanzelfsprekend. Voor mij is het sinds een jaar of vijf één van de grootste uitdagingen in het dagelijkse leven.

<div>Mijn naam is Bo. Ik ben een jonge vrouw van 26 en ik leef onder andere met autisme; PTSS; en een functioneel neurologische stoornis (FNS). Dit zorgt onder meer voor fysieke instabiliteit, paniekaanvallen, en dissociaties. De diagnoses werken negatief op elkaar in, en versterken elkaar op een negatieve manier. Wanneer mijn brein vastloopt en mijn lichaam mij in de steek laat, ben ik kwetsbaar en voel ik me weerloos. In het verleden hebben in zulke momenten nare gebeurtenissen plaatsgevonden, waardoor mijn gevoel van veiligheid en vertrouwen in zowel mezelf als anderen ernstig is aangetast. Hierdoor zijn alledaagse dingen zoals een wandelingetje maken; naar een medische afspraak gaan; familie of vrienden bezoeken; of reizen met de trein; etc., voor mij geen vanzelfsprekendheid, maar een grote uitdaging.

<div>Zodra ik de wereld in stap word ik compleet overspoeld door alle indrukken. Angst voor herhaling van traumatische gebeurtenissen; een gebrek aan voorspelbaarheid; en overprikkeling roepen hierbij een sterk gevoel van onveiligheid op. Het is zó overweldigend dat mijn systeem in een overleefstand schiet. Ik raak het contact met mezelf en mijn omgeving kwijt en maak de situatie niet meer bewust mee (dissociatie). Een gevoel van (basis)veiligheid en vertrouwen ontbreekt.

<div>Ik heb jarenlang verschillende therapieën gevolgd en medicijnen geprobeerd. Helaas zonder duurzaam positief resultaat, in sommige gevallen zelfs met verslechtering als gevolg. Een andere aanpak is nodig. Recent ben ik in een bijzonder mooi traject beland waarbij ik onze puppy, Nuki, onder begeleiding van specialisten op kan leiden tot hulphond. Zodat wij samen, in vertrouwen en met steun van elkaar, stap voor stap de wereld kunnen gaan (her)ontdekken.

<div>Nuki praat en oordeelt niet; biedt mij houvast en nabijheid; en werkt als een soort buffer tussen mij en de prikkels. Ze is afhankelijk van mij en dat houdt mij gefocust. Dit op zich helpt al. Als hulphond mag Nuki overal met mij mee naartoe. Ook kan zij mij bijvoorbeeld leren helpen tijdens momenten van paniek en dissociatie, of zelfs om zulke situaties te voorkomen. Doordat ik de wereld met haar weer vanuit aanwezigheid mee kan gaan maken kan een gevoel van vertrouwen en veiligheid langzaam, stukje bij beetje, weer in mijn systeem kruipen.

<div>Het opleiden van een hulphond vraagt veel tijd, inzet, en brengt behoorlijke kosten met zich mee. Voor dit laatste vraag ik jullie hulp. Elke bijdrage – groot of klein – maakt voor mij een verschil en helpt mij een stap dichter bij een toekomst waarin ik weer meer vrijheid, veiligheid en zelfstandigheid kan ervaren.

<div>Nuki is op dit moment 9 weken oud en bijna een week bij ons in huis. Ze is ontzettend lief en stoer, en binnenkort staat de eerste training gepland, ik kan niet wachten!

<div>For many people, leaving the house is something they do without thinking. For me, for about five years now, it has been one of the biggest challenges in my daily life.

<div>My name is Bo. I am a 26-year-old woman, and I live with autism, PTSD, and a functional neurological disorder (FND). These conditions cause, among other things: physical instability, panic attacks, and dissociation. The diagnoses negatively affect one another and tend to reinforce each other in difficult ways. When my brain shuts down and my body lets me down, I am vulnerable and feel defenseless. In the past, painful things have happened during such moments, which has seriously affected my sense of safety and my trust in both myself and others. Because of this, everyday things like going for a short walk, attending a medical appointment, visiting family or friends, or traveling by train, etc. are major challenges.

<div>The moment I step out into the world, I am completely overwhelmed by all the impressions around me. The fear of traumatic events reoccuring, a lack of predictability, and sensory overload create a strong feeling of unsafety. It’s often so overwhelming that my system switches into survival mode. I lose contact with myself and my surroundings and am no longer consciously present in the situation (dissociation). A basic sense of safety and trust is missing.

<div>Over the years, I have had various forms of therapy and tried different medications. Unfortunately, they have not brought lasting positive results, and in some cases they even made things worse. A different approach is needed. Recently, I found myself in a very special and hopeful journey: together with specialists, I am able to train our puppy, Nuki, to become my assistance dog. Step by step, we hope to (re)discover the world together, supporting and trusting each other along the way.

<div>Nuki does not talk or judge. She offers me grounding and closeness, and she acts as a kind of buffer between me and the overwhelming stimuli around me. She depends on me, which helps me to stay focused and more present. These things help already. As an assistance dog, Nuki will be allowed to accompany me everywhere. She can also be trained to help me during moments of panic and dissociation, or even help prevent such situations. By experiencing the world again with her by my side, I can slowly start to rebuild a sense of safety and trust in my system, step by step.

<div>Training an assistance dog requires a great deal of time, dedication, and financial resources. It is for this last part that I am asking for your help.
