Education to Empower Pippi Girls

Donation protected
Pippi House Foundation exists to provide shelter, food, safety and psychological support to the vulnerable women and children of Tanzania. The girls at Pippi have been removed from unimaginable situations of exploitation, sexual and physical abuse, domestic violence, forced marriage, commercial trafficking, prostitution, homelessness and extreme poverty.

Due to the incredible and empowering work of Pippi House and the director Aristides Nshange, many of these women and girls have overcome the numerous social, political, cultural and religious barriers which exist against women in Tanzania (including patriarchy, teenage pregnancy, domestic roles, forced marriage, female stereotypes) to complete their education up to secondary level. The only barrier they now must overcome is a financial one; without further funding our girls will not attend college to pursue their ambitious and far-reaching aspirations.

You could easily understand that after the troubles and difficulties our girls have endured throughout their lives, they would have little motivation to excel and continue an education, however this could not be further from the truth. Our recent graduates are some of the most inspirational girls you could ask to meet, filled with positivity and drive to better themselves and create a brighter future. They dream of becoming lawyers, engineers, nurses, teachers, social workers. Not only for the betterment of themselves and family, but foremost for selflessly promoting the rights and wellbeing of others.

Without further education, our girls can expect a life working in low-level jobs, earning approximately 10,000 shillings per day (£3.35, $4.45, €3.75) or unemployed. A college education will allow our girls to break free from the cycle of poverty and violence which traps future generations.

Attending college would be a life-changing opportunity for these girls, who truly deserve this chance to strive and achieve their potential. Although Pippi House provides emotional encouragement and enduring support, financial assistance is now imperative for our girls to progress to college. Between 2016-17, we have 13 girls who have graduated college. Unfortunately, it would be an unrealistic expectation for us to raise funds for all. We aim to raise money to support six girls -Elizabeth, Happiness, Glory, Felister, Amina, Neema - through college for one year, to achieve their “certificate”. Once they have earned this certificate, the girls are able to work in their chosen field, with the aim of earning the funds to progress further in their education if they wish, towards a diploma and bachelors.

The cost for each girl to attend college for 1 year is 3.5 million Tanzanian Shillings (TSH), approximately ($1562, €1328, £1185). This amount includes tuition fees (2mn TSH) and  accommodation, living costs, school supplies, food etc (1.5mn TSH). Our fundraising target is ($10,800,  €9100, £8000) which also accounts for the platform costs of GoFundMe.
We are absolutely determined and committed to raising this amount by May 2018 when the new college year begins. If you are in the position to donate £5 or £50, every single penny will help, it is absolutely a life-changing cause.
