Education Forward: Bani, Dominican Republic

As in many third world countries, the Dominican Republic is currently facing an educational disparity. The disparity, a direct cause of 46% of Dominicans living in poverty. Our founder, Hector Castillo Carvajal, lived in Provincia Bani, Dominican Republic for the first eight years of his life, his family often faced many obstacles. Being fortunate enough to have bigger and better opportunities in the U.S., he always felt inclined to assist those abroad who aren’t as well resourced as many folks in the U.S.

Our aim is to serve students from Pre-K all the way to 8th grade since 55% of the student population is within that range. Out of the entire possible student population (ranging from Pre-K to college, and never attended school) in Provincia Bani, 55% are enrolled in elementary school, however, by the time high school comes around, there is only a total of 22% continuing their education, meaning 33% of students drop out. Out of the 22% of students that graduate with a high school diploma, only 6% continue their education in college.

The average income in the Dominican Republic is approximately, USD $130/per month, barely enough to make ends meet for any family. Through your donations, we aim to build a fully furnished kitchen at Escuela Basica Graciosa Elvira Cueves (Elementary/Middle School in Bani) since they currently do not have a sustainable source of food for a total of 188 students. Additionally, we plan to deliver school supplies, and a smile to a child in Las Barias, Bani, Dominican Republic.
