I recently have had the privilege of working with a number of young adults (high school) who have moderate to severe academic anxiety and depression. I have witnessed them fight bravely to reach their goals, often in spite of little to no recognition for what they have to endure. Their illness is private, it can't be seen unlike the physical illness that our society so readily accommodates.
I also have had the pleasure of watching several of these individuals forget their own troubles when they saw the needs of others, especially in children who were much younger and faced the same, or even worse challenges. Working with those kids often made them forget their own troubles as well as giving them a sense of purpose and accomplishment.
They also witnessed how something that they personally hated was able to be used to bring happiness and fulfillment to others. I have seen a hatred of Math turn around when one of these individuals was able to work with and over come the challenges of a much younger kid with the same subject. They were able to see Math in a new light through their own efforts to educate.
The purpose here is to raise enough money to offer a 6-week work program for two of these young adults which would not only give them money towards their college education (both of whom want to work with underprivileged and special needs kids) but also to allow them to do something they love and show them what they can achieve in spite of the challenges with their anxiety and depression which they will likely have to fight their entire lives.
These six-week programs will be directly under my supervision, and they will work with kids who themselves face many challenges, being in foster care, having ADHD, ODD and themselves dealing with anxiety and other mental health issues. If there is more money raised then the program will simply be expanded as funds allow.(donations via PayPal)
