Education Re-imagined Internship Fund

Donation protected
My name is Kate McCarthy, and I am a passionate believer in life-long learning as a way of life. As early as grade school, a deep desire rose in me to re-imagine the education system. What would it look like if we built the journey of education in US from the foundation up, starting today? If we had no history, or nothing to compare it to? Would it be more technology driven, one-to-one personal connection driven, worldwide knowledgebase driven? I want to invest my love and appreciation for learning into traveling the world to uncover a spark of an idea in South America, a cutting edge technology tested in a small European town, or an innocent child's dream of how they could help a fellow student in South Africa and bring those ideas back to America. We no longer have the luxury of our ancestors to be trained in a skill at a young age and remain in that same career for the rest of our lives. We are now being called to be life-long learners, to have the ability and desire to adapt to the landscape of our ever-changing business and community models. And I find that both exhilarating and daunting. How can we truly prepare ourselves to thrive, not just survive this new way of operating?

**I have received enough money thus far and have been able to purchase my plane ticket! Woohoo! I will be heading out of Chicago O'Hare Airport at 1:45 pm on June 16th. But more donations are always welcome throughout the trip, up until the very last day!

I am currently a junior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I grew up going to schools in both Chicago and Asheville. I have always had a passion for education. Changing schools between Chicago and Asheville I got to experience both large schools and smaller-sized schools. While in high school, I was watching a movie called Waiting for Superman which is about the education system and how it needs to be more helpful for our children. This sparked my passion for re-imagining the education system and being involved in new ways to get an education. This alternative education route led me to the opportunity I received for this summer.

A couple of years ago my mom sent me an article about the Knowmads Business School. The program sounded really cool and I was right up my alley in terms of the kinds of education that I wanted to be involved in. I was determined to meet Martin Cadeé, a co-founder of the school. Fast forward to this past Fall, I went home to surprise my parents and it turned out that a few people were staying at my mom's house for a wedding near by. And Martin was one of the people staying at the house. I was blown away that someone who was so connected in the alternative education network was at my house and I had the opportunity to meet him. We began talking about what he was involved in and what I was interested in pursuing. Everything that he talked about totally resonated with me.

Working with Martin
This summer I have an amazing opportunity to work with a fellow education re-imaginer named Martin Cadeé. He is a co-founder of the Knowmads Business School in The Netherlands and is currently working on a new gap year program called The Journey Network. I will be doing an internship with Martin and The Journey Network. I will be working along side Martin as well as meeting with and getting to know the people who he knows within the education world. Martin is a big supporter of innovative ways of educating our children, which is why working with him and being connected to the people who he knows is such a great opportunity for me! My ultimate goal for this internship is to find new ways of teaching education and bringing them back to my community in Chapel Hill, Chicago, or Asheville, along with tons of other places across the United States. I want this to be a learning experience that drives my passion even further and helps me to make the connection that can further my career goals for creating a better and healthier education system for future generations.

My Trip
I am living in Amsterdam from June 17 until July 30. During my stay I hope to be able to do some traveling. I will be attending the ChangeMaker Festival in Sweden June 29-July 5. I hope to also be able to travel to London, Spain, and Paris. Most of my stay will be in Amsterdam while working with The Journey Network and The Knowmads Business School.

Funding
I am looking for the money to fund my trip to The Netherlands to work with Martin, The Journey Network, and the Knowmads Business School. Any bit helps and is greatly appreciated!

In words spoken more beautifully than I am capable of, Suri Breaks gives a good overview about what it is about education that drives my passion to help improve and re-imagine it. Here is a link to his video about "Why he hates school but loves education."
