Education Opportunity Knocks

Without your help, Beth's opportunity to study in China will be missed.

Concurrent Education Pilot Project

Beth is about to complete 3 years of Acupuncture in 2 years at Georgian College in Barrie. She has been working in the concurrent program, the first time ever it has been offered, in conjunction with Shanghai University in China towards a 5 Yr Degree. This means that, with her transfer credits, she goes directly into year 4 of the 5 yr program in China this September.

Benefits of Education in China

Beth will come home with the finest skill in acupuncture possible and will be one of the best acupuncturists in Ontario, allowing her to help countless people. She is so grateful for what she has learned so far, for her mom's support, and for the opportunity supported by people like you.

Why Does She Need Your Help?
When she signed up, she was to start in March 2019 and complete the program in February 2021. Recently this was changed to September 2018 to July 2020. She has applied for bursaries, scholarships, and funding from OSAP. Nothing has come through yet. No approval has even been confirmed that Shanghai University is on the list of approved universities for funding. Her financial needs are more than her mom earns in a year. Deadlines Her insurance must be paid before her departure Aug 26. She must pay her tuition, dorm fees, and meal plan on Aug 31.

Her Expenses                               Year 4                Year 5
tuition                                             $8,200                $8,200
visa processing once                     200
health insurance                           1300                    1300
dorm fees (300/mo)                    3600                    3600

These are bare costs on a strict budget and does not include any spending money or travel money while in China.

Background

Beth has overcome much in her life. At 5yrs old she suffered a brain injury. She was not allowed to continue at the school she attended because they could not handle her condition. She changed schools. She spent Gr1 and Gr2 at another school. About this time, her abusive father left and has been unsupportive ever since. Beth underwent educational testing and, though she was diagnosed with a learning disability, her scores at grade one were at the grade 4 level in many areas. Beth was home schooled by her mom from Gr 3 to Gr 8. She chose to go to high school where the guidance counselor tried to put her in Basic, then Applied, and Mom insisted she go into Academic. Though she had an IEP throughout high school, Beth graduated with honours in 2016 from Haliburton Highlands Secondary School and received the Volunteer Award. She has completed a 3yr program in Acupuncture in 2yrs, quite an accomplishment with no allowances for her learning disability.

Mom's faith

Though her mom doesn't make much money in a year, she believes that God will provide, in spite of the theft of an inheritance that was left for Beth's education and provision for her aging mom!

How Can you help?

Consider the opportunity she has. Consider how much she has accomplished to date in spite of her disability. Consider her single mom's income of $20,000/yr. Consider donating generously. Consider how grateful Beth will be!
