Education Fundraiser & COVID-19 Relief

Donation protected
Hello, I am Beatrice Torres and my goal is to raise funds to be able to continue my education at the University of Texas at Austin.

Antonio Torres, my father, was a man who not only had love for me and my family, but also had a lot to spare for everyone and anyone who crossed his path. Everything that he did was done with happiness and with the intent to help others grow. At home and at work, he instilled wisdom. For me personally, he has shown me to never cower in the face of fear. To follow my heart, goals, and dreams regardless of circumstance. He gave me and my siblings a life where no obstacle could stand in our way especially with his guidance and motivation to support us. He was more than a father, husband, brother, son, and  co-worker. He was a leader, a mentor, a warrior, and, now, an angel. I don't feel like words would ever give him justice for how he made us feel and how he was with my mom, siblings, and employees. We all loved him and will always love him.

Unfortunately, on September 2nd, with a beautiful clear sky, my father succumbed from the damage COVID-19 did to his body after a two month battle. Not only has this caused emotional trauma for me and my family, but this has also left us with a tremendous financial burden. My father was the primary financial provider for my family and with his recent passing, we are now struggling to make ends meet especially with hospital bills, funeral, home, rent, tuition, and everyday expenses coming our way.

I am a Latina, first generation college student pursuing a bachelor's degree in neuroscience and certificates in Spanish for the Medical Professions and Business in Spanish at the University of Texas at Austin. In my time at UT, I have been part of several research labs such as Project SEED, JUNTOS, and Memories 2 lab. In Project SEED, I studied the physiological effects of language-brokering in Latinx youth. In JUNTOS, I observed and participated in focus groups with Latinx high school students and parents to better understand how cultural stressors impact adolescent health, well-being, and academics. In Memories 2, I was trained on “motivational interviewing,” where the conversation revolved solely on the patient (older individuals with minor cognitive impairment) and gearing them towards a positive mindset around the premise of change. Outside of research, I am the Treasurer of StudentsCare, an organization dedicated to creating a pleasant and structured environment for children experiencing prolonged stays at Dell Children’s Hospital. And recently, I was accepted to Dell Medical School’s Health Leadership Apprenticeship program, where I will work with a team to propose and design a project based on Dell Med’s community driven initiatives.

It was always my father’s wish and goal to see me pursue and finish my education in neuroscience to be able to make a difference in the world and help people, such as my mother, who will soon be a double brain tumor survivor, be able to live long happy lives with their families.

It is my goal to continue to pursue my father’s and my goal to make a positive difference in the world. Any and all help is very much appreciated during these difficult times.

Thank you very much!
