Educate Children of Cambodia

Every child has the right to an education.
Help us educate the next generation of Cambodia.

In Cambodia, families in rural areas depend on farming as their main source of income. Most parents are uneducated and do not realize the importance of educating their children. Farming in Cambodia, as in many other countries, is hard work and families struggle to earn enough money to meet the basic needs of survival. They feel that if their children go to school, they will lose valuable help with labor, household duties and childcare. Schools are often a long distance away from villages and as purchasing a bicycle may not be within reason, just getting to school is often an obstacle.

Enter C.O.S.D.
Cambodia Organization of Social Development (C.O.S.D.) believes every child has the right to an education. We aim to provide a basic education to children in rural areas who, due to circumstances out of their control, would otherwise not have the chance of attending school.

Prey Thmei Village School Project
In 2013, C.O.S.D. initiated its first project: Prey Thmei Village School, located 7km west of Siem Reap in Prey Thmei Village. We first started out teaching children in homes, sheds and open spaces. With the support from donors around the world, and the hard physical work of community members, we opened a dedicated school in 2015, which boasts two classrooms, one area for community meetings, bathrooms for males and females and running water.

The school provides free lessons to 60+ children each week (and growing!) from Prey Thmei Village and the surrounding area. We offer six classes a day, Monday - Friday, teaching Khmer, English, History and Math. The program has been well received by the community. The students are such keen learners that they began to appear outside Son Sorm’s house on Saturdays and Sundays, books in hand, and eager to study. To quench their thirst for knowledge, weekend classes were added.

With more students joining our classes each week, we are eager to expand and create more spaces for more students to learn and grow.

How Your Donations Will Be Used
Each dollar raised will fund:
- $5,000: Hire additional teachers for Prey Thmei Village School.
- $3,000: Building of library, larger playground, futbol field and housing for future volunteers on the newly purchased land.

Who Is Behind C.O.S.D.?
C.O.S.D. was the brainchild of Son Sorm, a survivor of the Khmer Rouge reign, who has dedicated his life to providing Cambodian children with the opportunity to be educated. He hopes the children will continue to rebuild Cambodia and once again make it the “Kingdom of Wonder.” Read more of his story:
