Edmund Reid Headstone

Donation protected
When retired Detective Inspector Edmund Reid died in 1917 no headstone was erected on his grave in Herne Bay Cemetery. He was a well known local character in his later years, and has become well known to a wider audience as the main character in "Ripper Street", played by Matthew Macfadyen.

A group of enthusiasts, the Herne Bay Cemeterians, who take great interest in and care of their local cemeteries and graveyards, value Edmund Reid as a significant local character and have kindly produced a brass plaque to place on his grave when they run open days, or on significant anniversaries. https://www.facebook.com/friendsofhernebaycemetery/

The interest in Edmund has led to many visitors asking why his grave isn't marked, and so the opportunity has arisen to rectify this. A local stonemason has generously offered to provide and engrave the stone, but the local council (who runs the Cemetery) have to be paid a fee for the right to erect the memorial.

My grandfather, Edmund Smith, was named after his grandfather, Edmund Reid. I remember him recalling being taken, aged 5, by his grandfather to the Tower of London in 1901 to hear the proclamation of the Accession of Edward VII on the death of Queen Victoria. As Edmund's family, we would be delighted to involve those who are interested in him in sharing the opportunity to create a lasting memorial to his remarkable life.

In the event that surplus funds are raised, they will be shared between the Herne Bay Cemeterians (to support their work) and the Metropolitan Police Benevolent Fund.
