The Lumumba Film

 We're asking you to join us in completing our new film about The Lumumba Family and their
commitment to human rights, social justice and economic democracy.

A few years ago, through my brother Dominic, I learned about the mayor of Jackson, Mississippi,
Chokwe Lumumba Sr.
     
Born in Detroit, Chokwe came back to Jackson in the 1980s to bring social justice and economic
democracy to the city.   Chokwe wanted "human rights for human beings," as his son, Chokwe Antar
Lumumba ( the newly elected mayor of Jackson) said when he spoke at the People's Summit in Chicago.

Chokwe Sr.  worked for human rights for 30 years, and after serving as a city councilman was elected
mayor of Jackson in 2013, He had only begun to make changes in the city before he tragically died after
only 8 months in office.

Chokwe Sr.'s children, Antar and his sister Rukia, who grew up in the human rights movement, both
became attorneys and have worked hard to carry on their father's legacy, believing in the same ideals and principles their father did.

We started filming Antar as he ran for office soon after his father passed away, in 2014.  He lost that bid
for mayor, but ran again in 2017,  winning the election by a landslide on June 6th.

Chokwe Antar Lumumba said at the People's Summit in Chicago,  "We are going to rescue
ourselves. We won't allow places like Jackson MS to become havens of oppression. We've made the
decision that we're going to be the most radical city on the planet. We're going to make certain that we
change the whole scope of electoral politics."

 I asked Rukia Lumumba why people in other parts of the country should care about what happens in
Jackson.  "We're trying to be a model for the country, we're trying to create something different than
we've ever seen happen in any other city across America.  Hopefully  what we do here can inspire
people to make changes in their city."
