My Mother, Joyce, is a kind and caring woman who absolutely loves nature and her 9 Grandchildren. Unfortunately, she has also endured more pain than any of us could have imagined. After 20 years of complicted medical problems, surgeries and debilitating pain she had a few good months and could finally feel her strength coming back. At this time her doctor recommended she replace a spinal stimulator that she had had for years so that she could lessen her pain to an even greater degree, which sounded so promising. Sadly, the operation that was suppose to reduce her pain created devastation when she woke up from the surgery and could not feel anything from the chest down.
The doctors were baffled and said that they do not know if it is permanent or not and that there was nothing they can do to help her. They claimed that this was a risk of spine surgery and she just happened to be the %1 of people this happens to. The surgey was an outpatient, routine surgery, but that was 4 weeks ago and my Mom is still not walking and has multiple complications due to the paralysis.
It's overwhelming for us as a family to watch this woman that we all love so much go through this and we want to do anything to assist her right now. She is trying so hard to be strong, but as you can imagine she is also feeling very defeated at times. The 20 years of prior medical problems drained her and my Dad of their finances and they are barely getting by.
This fundraising is to assist Joyce with all of the immediate medical requirements that she now needs to survive. She has to find a new place to live that will accomodate a wheel chair, she needs a new vehicle that will be able to take her to therapy appointments, she needs all types of new home medical devices for her saftey, a home health care aid, 5 days a week of therapy sessions, and she needs help with the exorbitant medical bills that keep coming in. Her insurance company has taken a back seat appraoch to her healing and refuses to pay for the assistance she truly needs. ( They will only pay for 2 hours a week of therapy )
We are left to reach out and ask anyone who can help to be apart of Joyce walking again. We believe that she can do it and we are all rooting for her! She has begun to move her toes and her ankles and has even been able to stand up for 2 minutes when she was holding onto the parallel bars. This is going to be a long road of healing and we want to let Joyce know that we are with her and support her every small step of the way!! Joyce says she is determined to get better so that she can take her Grandchildren fishing again.
