Eddie Perez: 29029

29029 is an event started by Marc Hodulich, Jesse Itzler and Colin O’Brady based around the question “Do you have what it takes to climb Everest?”. This is an idea many people have thought about but have never been able to test because of the time commitment, finical commitment, and physical danger. This is where 29029 comes in.

29029 is a four-day event with the main attraction being a 36 hour period where 250 participants are challenged to climb up a ski slope at Snow Basin, Utah, 13 times over. The 13 climbs add to 29,029 feet of total elevation climbed, or the height of Mount Everest.

The end goal is not to summit the mountain. The end goal is to raise $10,000 for Operation Red Shoes, a non-profit based in Memphis, TN, who helps patients at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Luis Aguilar is a native Honduran who was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma and moved to Memphis in 2011 to receive treatment. This is where he met McKendree Walker, who had Thyroid cancer at the time. Luis and McKendree met, fell in love, and used the light that was their relationship to help other patients. They spread Joy around the desolate hospital through music and laughter. They were an inspiration for so many people, patients and non-patients alike. Luis Loved his red shoes, too. He was always wearing them and they became a part of who he was.

Luis passed away in 2015 when I was just 11 years old. I did, although, have the honor of meeting him. He taught me so much even though our encounters were brief. Luis taught me how to keep a smile no matter the circumstances. He taught me how to put one red shoe in front of the other, and that is what I plan to do at Snow Basin, when I take on 29029-Everesting.

Operation Red Shoes started in 2015 when a random series of events occurred, much like the randomness of teen cancer. When McKendree Walker and her family ordered red shoes in honor of Luis for his funeral, Zappos, though a random customer service review session, took notice to the inspirational story. They decided to sponsor the Walker family to keep Luis’s legacy of putting others before himself alive. Your $10,000 will go to help 5 different children and families like Luis Aguilar and McKendree Walker. Please consider donating.
