Open Channel: a public installation for listening
A project conceived and developed by Ahmad Khouja (architect and music producer), and produced by Abir Saksouk (architect and urbanist).
Open Channel is a public audio-architectural installation that will allow for an immersive and interactive sound experience through 30 speakers routed through an 8-channel surround sound system. The project will be on exhibit in various public spaces in Beirut to provoke interaction with passersby, as well as to bring audiences to them. The series of planned exhibitions involve locations that have either been forgotten, restricted or may soon lose their public access. The pre-recorded audio streams will be supplied by local musicians, while the live experience will be supplied by the public itself via Bluetooth phone connection, consequently turning the installation into an interactive outdoor concert.

At first, the project will be on exhibition during the Horch Beirut Festival (Tayyoune entrance facing Baba Sweets) from 26 to 28 September 2014. After that, it will be relocated to another part of the Horch (the one open to the public, Qassqass entrance) for a period of two weeks during which there will be an opening and a music event featuring the work of the artists participating in this phase of the project: Majd al-Hamwi, Kheiry Eibesh, Ahmad Khouja.

During the months of October and November, the project will tour in several public spaces in Beirut for a period of two weeks in each location. Stay tuned for the final tour schedule that will include places such as Ramlet el-Baida beach, Karantina Park, Sioufi Garden and the Dalieh of Raouche.

Most of the funds to see the project through have already been raised (materials, labor, machining) thanks to support from Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC) and Nahnoo...however since the project took on a public dimension fees for sound equipment, labor and maintenance during the 2-3 months of exhibition are missing. The funds we are trying to raise here will complete that budget gap and cover the costs for:

- lights (30 compact flourescent fixtures)
- labor (finishing and additional carpentry)
- rentals (flat-bed truck and electric generator)
- maintanence visits (daily visits by audio engineer for the duration of the exhibition schedule)
- artist fees (local music producers for 2nd and 3rd exhibitions)

أشغال عامة للإستماع
إذاعة مفتوحة عمل فني عام، وهو عبارة عن نصب سمعي ومعماري، يقدم لجمهوره تجربة صوتية تفاعلية. سيتم وضع الهيكل الخشبي في مساحات عامة في المدينة، ليتمكن العمل من جذب عروض أو مناسبات عامة وذلك من شأنه أن يجلب الناس الى هذه الأماكن العامة وتفعيلها، على الأخص تلك المهملة منها. سيكون ذلك مفيداً سواء للفت الإنتباه الى تلك المساحات، أو لتفاعل الجمهور معها. التجربة الصوتية هي عبارة عن تسجيلات موسيقية لمنتجي موسيقى محليين، بالإضافة الى صوتيات حيّة يتم تزويدها من قبل الجمهور نفسه عبر وسيلة "البلوتوث" المتوفرة على جهاز الهاتف الخاص بهم، ليتحوّل الهيكل الى حفل موسيقي من إعداد الجمهور العابر.

بدايةً، سيتم عرض المشروع خلال مهرجان حرش بيروت (مدخل الطيونة مقابل حلويات البابا) من 26 حتى 28 أيلول 2014.
من بعدها سينتقل الى طرف آخر من الحرش (الجزء منه المفتوح للعام، مدخل قصقص) ليبقى ثلاثة أسابيع، يتخللها إفتتاح مع حفلة موسيقية للفنانين المشاركين في المرحلة الأولى: مجد الحموي، أحمد خجا، خيري إيبش.
خلال شهر تشرين الأول، سيتنقل العمل في بيروت ويتم عرضه في عدد من المساحات العامة لمدة ثلاثة أسابيع في كل منها. ترقبوا برنامج العروض الذي سيضم أماكن مثال شاطىء الرملة البيضاء، حديقة الكرنتينا، حديقة السيوفي ودالية الروشة.
