Equal Civil Partnerships Campaign

In October 2014 Rebecca Steinfeld and Charles Keidan tried to give notice for a mixed-sex civil partnership at their local register office in London to be told that only same-sex couples could register as civil partners.

A lengthy court-case against the Government, culminating in a unanimous win at the Supreme Court together with a successful political win, supporting Tim Loughton MP's Private Members Bill through Parliament, led to a law change in 2019. Rebecca and Charles were finally able to register their civil partnership on 31st December 2019 at Chelsea Town Hall, the register office which had to turn them away five years before.

On 26 March 2019, the Civil Partnerships, Marriages and Deaths (Registration etc) Act 2019 received Royal Assent.  Section 2 authorised the making of the Civil Partnership (Opposite-Sex Couples) Regulations 2019, which came into force in England and Wales on 2 December 2019.  These were followed by the Marriage (Same-sex Couples) and Civil Partnership (Opposite-sex Couples) (Northern Ireland) Regulations 2019 (in force on 13 January 2020), and the Civil Partnership (Scotland) Act 2020 (https://www.legislation.gov.uk/asp/2020/15/enacted, Royal Assent on 28 July 2020, in force on 1 June 2021).

Mixed-sex civil partnerships will be a legal reality throughout the UK by the middle of 2021. The ECP group remain active in supporting couples but will no longer be taking an active campaigning role.

Thank you for your support.
