Agroecological Training- Young Community Leaders

GoFundMe Update:
We have successfully run our February 2019 course in Guatemala!

We had to make some changes to the course since we didn't raise our goal of $5,000 as we had hoped BUT it was still a great success and we would like to thank everyone who made a contribution.

We are still working towards hitting our $5,000 goal as we approach our next course that will be held May 9-16, 2019 in Uspantan, Quiche, Guatemala, partnering with SERES Uspantan.

Here's a video, put together by the talented Jose Misa, from our time with students in Tecpan, Guatemala in February 2019. Every little bit helps!

Saludos!

R.E.I.S.A. - Network of Independent Educators for Food Sovereignty

We are a network of educators from Guatemala called REISA who share Agricultural and Ecological training courses with young community leaders in Guatemala and El Salvador. Our target audience for these courses are economically disadvantaged and unable to pay for the course, although, they can benefit greatly from the knowledge and experience they gain.

We work in collaboration with SERES , a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that is committed to supporting at-risk youth from low-income, marginalized and vulnerable groups to give them the skills they need to become community leaders and engaged citizens. It gives special attention to youth in frontline communities within Guatemala and El Salvador where intensifying climatic changes, increasing violence, growing income disparities and limited economic opportunities are making growing numbers of youth vulnerable to the influence of gangs, crime, migration and other impacts of social disintegration.

Once a student has committed to the SERES leadership training and attended several trainings, they are given the opportunity to participate in our Agroecological Course to further their education. Every one of our students comes to us with a unique story but several common themes amongst them are young leaders who:

- are natives of Mesoamerica (cultural region encompassing Southern Mexico to Costa Rica).

- are between the ages of 15-25.

- want to learn, reinforce their knowledge and promote the implementation and ethical management of agroecological food production systems.

- want to develop new skills and perspectives.

- are interested in learning theoretical and practical principles to design and manage agro-ecological food production systems, from seed to the processing of crops, on small and medium scale operations.

- are conscious about a need to find sustainable, decent income producing alternatives in their homes instead of their being a constant outflow of the population to cities or the United States looking for work.

- want to learn more about the environment in order to care of it.
