On January 26, 2024, Lupe lost a court eviction brought against her by NELA Group, developers who plan to flip the historic home where she grew up, raised her kids, and has lived for the last 61 years.

<div>In 2022, Lupe organized a successful campaign to designate her home a historic monument and save 3 rent-controlled units from demolition. In addition to being the oldest house in Echo Park, 1553 Ewing was also home to the Arechigas, the last family to be publicly and violently evicted from the communities of Palo Verde, La Loma, and Bishop (known today as Chavez Ravine) in 1959 after years of refusal.

<div>Decades later, the city continues to fail working class people by facilitating growing numbers of evictions, rent increases, and homelessness. As a disabled woman who can't work and can’t afford market-rate rent, Lupe has very few options when the sheriff's notices are posted in the next couple weeks.
