NEW HANDS AND A NEW LIFE FOR EVA
Eva is an 11-year-old girl born in a small, very poor village in Upper Volta, an area of Ghana.
She was entrusted to an uncle and his family so that she could study in a village not far from home in the company of another child she was very fond of. One day, before going to the market, her aunt asked her to clean a room and when she returned, the lady, not satisfied with her work, decided to punish her by making her dip her hands in a pot of boiling water. Eva was then kept locked in a room to prevent people from learning about the incident. Fortunately her brother, who had started to look for her, managed to find her and took her immediately to the hospital where, however, the treatments were very summary and useles
Eva then took refuge in a center run by American nuns, who help minors who have suffered injuries and amputations. It was this association that got in touch with us at GICAM Groupe International Chirurgiens Amis de la Main, explaining Eva's story.
We launched into action and Prof. Lanzetta Bertani organized video calls with Eva via Skype for six months, to give her physiotherapy sessions for her hands, which unfortunately were unusable.
Thanks to the help of the Swiss government, it was possible to provide passports and visas for Eva and a companion, so that they could get to Zurich and the child could be operated on.
And that's what happened: the GICAM doctors operated on Eva's left hand at the Bellinzona hospital in collaboration with the local staff. The surgery, carried out by Prof. Lanzetta Bertani, Dr. Stefano Lucchina, and Dr. Cesare Fusetti, went well and the child then went to Rome for rehabilitation and headed back to Ghana on 24 June.
In September, Eva will be coming back to Switzerland for surgery on her right hand. Her left hand is currently healing very well and hopefully the same will be true for her other hand, which is more deformed.
This story moved us deeply. We noticed that she is a very intelligent and perceptive girl with a great desire to learn. So we decided to set up this fundraiser to enable her to apply her excellent skills and to offer her a better future. We hope to make it possible for Eva to study as far as she wants to, at schools and universities, even abroad, where she will be able to fully develop herself and her skills.
This fundraiser will be managed by GICAM in a special fund called “Borsa studio per Eva” (“Scholarship for Eva”).

NUOVE MANI E UNA NUOVA VITA PER EVA
Eva è una bambina di 11 anni nata in un piccolo villaggio molto povero dell'Alto Volta, una zona del Ghana.
È stata affidata ad uno zio e alla sua famiglia affinche' potesse studiare in un villaggio non lontano da casa in compagnia di un altro bambino a cui lei era molto affezionata.
Un giorno, prima di andare al mercato, la zia le ha chiesto di pulire una stanza e quando e' tornata, la signora, non soddisfatta del suo lavoro, ha deciso di punirla facendole immergere le mani in una pentola di acqua bollente. Eva è stata poi tenuta rinchiusa in una stanza per evitare che le persone venissero a conoscenza dell'accaduto. Fortunatamente il fratello, che aveva iniziato a cercarla, è riuscito a trovarla e l'ha portata immediatamente in ospedale dove pero' le cure sono state molto sommarie e inutili.
Eva si è così rifugiata in un centro gestito da suore americane che si occupano di aiutare i minorenni che hanno subito lesioni e amputazioni. È stata proprio questa associazione a mettersi in contatto con noi del GICAM Groupe International Chirurgiens Amis de la Main, spiegandoci la storia di Eva.
Ci siamo così mobilitati e il Prof. Lanzetta Bertani ha organizzato videocall via Skype con Eva per sei mesi, per sottoporla a sedute di fisioterapia alle mani, che purtroppo risultavano inutilizzabili.
Grazie all'aiuto del governo svizzero è stato possibile fornire a Eva e a un accompagnatore il Passaporto e il Visto, in modo che potessero raggiungere Zurigo e che la bimba potesse essere operata.
E così è stato: i medici del GICAM hanno operato la mano sinistra di Eva all'ospedale di Bellinzona insieme con lo staff locale. L'intervento, svolto dal Prof. Lanzetta Bertani, il Dottor Stefano Lucchina e il Dottor Cesare Fusetti, è andato bene e la bimba è andata poi a Roma per la riabilitazione e il 24 Giugno è ripartita per il Ghana.
A settembre Eva tornerà in Svizzera per l'intervento alla mano destra. Attualmente la mano sinistra sta guarendo molto bene e si spera possa avvenire lo stesso anche per l'altra mano, che risulta più deformata.
Questa storia ci ha commosso molto. Abbiamo notato che è una ragazzina molto intelligente e perspicace e con una gran voglia di apprendere. Pertanto abbiamo deciso di creare questa raccolta fondi per consentirle di applicare le sue ottime capacità e poterle offrire un futuro migliore. Ci siamo riproposti di fare studiare Eva fino a dove lei vorrà, nelle scuole e università, anche estere, dove potrà esprimere il meglio di sé e delle sue abilità.
Questa raccolta fondi verrà gestita da GICAM in un fondo apposito denominato “Borsa studio per Eva”.

NEUE HÄNDE UND EIN NEUES LEBEN FÜR EVA
Eva ist ein Mädchen im Alter von 11 Jahren, das in einem sehr armen Dorf in Overvolta, einer Region in Ghana, geboren wurde.
Sie wurde einem Onkel und seiner Familie anvertraut, damit sie in einem Dorf nicht weit von zu Hause zur Schule gehen konnte, zusammen mit einem anderen Kind, an dem sie sehr hing.
Eines Tages, bevor sie zum Markt ging, bat ihre Tante sie, ein Zimmer zu putzen. Als sie zurückkam, war die Dame mit ihrer Arbeit nicht zufrieden und beschloss aus diesem Grunde, sie zu bestrafen, indem sie das Mädchen zwang, ihre Arme in einen Topf mit kochendem Wasser zu tauchen.
Eva wurde dann in einem Raum eingesperrt, damit die Leute nicht erfahren, was passiert war. Glücklicherweise konnte ihr Bruder, der sich auf die Suche nach ihr gemacht hatte, sie finden und brachte sie sofort ins Krankenhaus, wo die Behandlung jedoch sehr oberflächlich und nutzlos war.
Eva fand auf diese Weise Zuflucht in einem Zentrum, das von amerikanischen Nonnen geleitet wird, die sich um Minderjährige kümmern, die Verletzungen und Amputationen erlitten haben. Es war ausgerechnet diese Einrichtung, die sich mit uns, der GICAM Groupe International Chirurgiens Amis de la Main, in Verbindung gesetzt und uns von Evas Geschichte erzählt hat.
Wir haben uns der Sache angenommen und Prof. Lanzetta Bertani organisierte daraufhin über einen Zeitraum von sechs Monaten regelmässige Videotelefonate mit Eva über Skype, um mit ihr eine Physiotherapie für ihre Hände durchzuführen, die ihre Funktionsfähigkeit leider aber vollständig eingebüsst hatten.
Dank der Hilfe der Schweizer Regierung war es möglich, für Eva und für eine Begleitperson einen Reisepass und ein Visum auszustellen, sodass sie gemeinsam nach Zürich reisen konnten, wo das Mädchen einer Operation unterzogen wurde.
Und so ist es schliesslich abgelaufen: Die Ärzte von GICAM haben Evas linke Hand im Krankenhaus Bellinzona zusammen mit dem Personal vor Ort operiert. Der Eingriff, der unter der Leitung von Prof. Lanzetta Bertani, Dr. Stefano Lucchina und Dr. Cesare Fusetti durchgeführt wurde, ist gut verlaufen und das Mädchen reiste anschliessend für eine Rehabilitation nach Rom, bevor sie am 24. Juni wieder nach Ghana zurückkehrte.
Im September wird Eva in die Schweiz zurückkehren, um auch an ihrer rechten Hand operiert zu werden. Momentan heilt die linke Hand sehr gut aus und es besteht die Hoffnung, dass das Gleiche auch mit der anderen Hand geschehen wird, die allerdings zu einem höheren Grad deformiert ist.
Diese Geschichte hat uns sehr bewegt. Wir haben bemerkt, dass Eva ein sehr kluges, aufmerksames und wissbegieriges kleines Mädchen ist. Deshalb haben wir uns entschlossen, diese Spendenaktion ins Leben zu rufen, um ihr die Möglichkeit zu geben, ihre hervorragenden Fähigkeiten anzuwenden und um ihr eine bessere Zukunft zu ermöglichen. Wir haben beschlossen, Eva die Möglichkeit zu geben, so lange und überall dort zu lernen und zu studieren, wie und wo sie möchte, in Schulen und Universitäten und auch im Ausland, damit sie das Beste aus sich herausholen und ihre Fähigkeiten optimal nutzen kann.
Diese Spendenaktion wird von GICAM in einem speziellen Fonds mit dem Namen «Borsa studio per Eva» (Stipendium für Eva) verwaltet.
