From Self Built Homes to Tents, Emergency Tent Drive
Advocates for the unhoused and community members across Oakland united on Monday, August 26 in a wide letter writing and call campaign to express their anger, frustration and disbelief about Mayor Libby Schaaf’s “Encampment Management Team” scheduled plans to tear down 21 self-built homes at a curbside community, for “fire code violations.” Located along San Leandro Blvd between 81-85th Aves in East Oakland, the community includes the home of a mother with a 1 month old baby. The outry called for the City to act in the best interest of the unhoused residents by working to relocate the residents to safer land including property offered by BART, and prioritize immediate housing for the mother with infant child. The City is set on destroying the homes due to “fire code violations” and the impact of the community being located under the BART tracks near Coliseum station. The residents will be allowed to temporarily remain, but forced to move their belongings and downgrade to tents. The City negotiated and has granted a two week extension before the homes will be dismantled to September 11, 2019. This will allow time to fundraise for the purchase of large family size tents equal to the sizes of the unhoused resident’s self built homes.
Urgency: deadline to raise money so we can purchase the tents and begin to set them up with residents is September 1.
Funds raised will go towards:
1) The purchase of 21 large size (8-12 person), flame retardant tents.
2) Large, heavy duty tarps.
3) Moving and packing supplies.
4) Fire safety devices and supplies.
