Update from Becky, Sept. 21, 2024:

The love of my life and my best friend graduated his mortal journey and proceeded to the next stage of the plan tonight. He was the ray of sunshine and “my runway” I used to call him. He gave me wings to fly when I struggled with crippling anxiety. I leaned on him so much. He was dedicated father, a fiercely loyal companion and the kindest person I’ve ever met. I imagine someday I’ll understand this “game of chess”, a friend called life, and why some of us have to go so soon. He says, “we ain’t playing checkers. We are playing chess, we are in it for the long game.”
I love you honey. I will see you again when I have proven worthy. Familes are forever.

My name is Julie Hart. Becky and I have been best friends for over 30 years. I’m setting up this gofundme for Becky and their 11 year old son, Brock, to help ease the financial burden of Becky’s husband’s, Steven, 6+ year long battle with cancer, upcoming funeral costs, and to give Becky a peace of mind while she navigates her future raising Brock on her own. All donations will go directly to Becky.
Steven’s cancer story is below.
Steven’s cancer journey began February 2018. It began with him losing partial vision in his right eye. He went to the Ophthalmologist which sent him over to a retina specialist. The doctor did multiple tests, including an ultrasound, where they discovered there was a mass in his right eye. The doctor then scheduled a biopsy. They got the news it was a rare cancer. After the confirmation of ocular melanoma, with a score of Type 1A, Steven was scheduled for a plaque radiation surgery localized to his eye for a week. The plaque was removed with another surgery and followed up with months and years of scans every three months. He was getting preventative shots for swelling in his eye and to decrease growth of the tumor. For about three years the tumor went dormant. Then a cataract formed in his eye due to the treatment of radiation. He had to have the cataract removed so the doctor could actually monitor and see the tumor.
Two more years went by with scans coming out clean and clear. Prayers were answered. This whole time Steven dedicated his life to working and providing for Becky and Brock and continued to serve the Lord through his church callings; in the bishopric, in primary activity days for boys and as a primary teacher. He loves the kids that he taught.
In November 2022, he noticed random belly pain around his liver and his hip. He had scans and discovered he had a lesion on his liver. A biopsy was scheduled immediately. They got word that the cancer had indeed metastasized to his liver, but he was not a surgery candidate. They were crushed. He was sent to a new oncologist and was told that Stevens type of cancer had a low likelihood of metastasis, a 6% chance to be exact. They pressed forward and trusted in the Lord and the treatment of immunotherapy. This went on for another year. Scans were continued every three months and showed more tumors in his hip, 4 ribs and back, and shoulder. They offered radiation for pain for the hip and shoulder. They consulted with the new oncologist and he was recommended a referral to MDA. They called them and they recommended a new treatment if Steven’s tumor had a genetic abnormality and he needed a blood test. Unfortunately his tumor didn’t have the abnormality so they had to stay with an older treatment. Not long after this, his doctor moved and they found an amazing oncologist in Kyle. He referred him to MDA. They met with them and they said to continue with the same treatment but to restart it. Steven could only be on the two immunotherapy drugs for four doses. Then he had to stop. It’s too hard on the body. They recommended restarting the meds again, so he did. But it was clear the cancer wouldn’t be stopped. He was sent back to MDA for a potential trial but found out about a new treatment of low level radiation and immunotherapy combined. They left hopeful and spent several days in Houston. And trips back and forth.
That brings us to August of 2024. By this time he had been fighting for over six years. And he was tired. Fatigue was worse than ever and his body couldn’t take anymore treatment. He was given two months at most to live. The oncologist advised he go immediately into the hospital for detox of the chemicals and steroids. He left the hospital feeling much better, but that didn’t last. Two weeks later his body said, I can’t anymore. He went on hospice and tried to work but couldn’t.
Note from Becky- So we are at the end. He is tired, his body is tired. He doesn’t want to leave us but we all must return home to our Heavenly Father. He just gets to do it sooner than me. We have been married 25 years and he is my best friend and companion. I will miss him till I see him again. He is an excellent dad and a faithful example of love and a dedicated servant of the Lord. The world will be less bright and have less laughter without him.
Becky says the company he works for has been amazing at supporting him, as well as their family, church family, and friends. Thank you to everyone for all your love, prayers and support so far and in the months to come. You are much appreciated.
