Ease Edith's Medical Expenses

Kyle and Ann will welcome their second child, a baby girl (whom they are naming "Edith") at the end of October.

At their routine 20-week ultrasound, the doctor discovered that the baby has two heart defects...a hole in her heart (VSD, the most common heart defect) and something more complex and rare called Double Outlet Right Ventricle. This condition means that the two great arteries of the heart both come off of the right ventricle, rather than one off of the right and one off of the left as they would in a healthy heart. The danger here is that oxygenated blood cannot properly pump throughout the body. This condition is life threatening and will require open heart surgery in the first days or weeks of Baby Edith's life.

Ann and Kyle plan leave Sioux Falls on October 16 and travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan to deliver Baby Edith. Open heart surgery will take place at Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor soon after birth. Mott is rated as one of the top three hospitals in the country specializing in congenital heart defects. Surgeons there are world renown, and success rates for these surgeries are 90% or higher. While Edith will never be "cured" or "fixed," her repair will enable her to live a full, normal life while managing this chronic health condition.

Kyle and Ann will be displaced from home, likely for 3-6 weeks, while Edith recovers from surgery. They plan to travel to Ann Arbor with their parents, and 20-month old Arthur will also spend some time in Michigan as he adjusts to his new role as big brother. Above and beyond medical expenses, the family anticipates high costs associated with travel, lodging, food, parking fees, and other miscellaneous items (forgetting a toothbrush, for example, or paying for special activities for Arthur while he is away from home).

Your thoughts and prayers are a tremendous support, as is any financial assistance you might offer. Ann and Kyle feel fortunate to be surrounded by such a loving, generous community and are so very grateful for the ways that you walk with them on this journey. We are all rooting for Baby Edith, and are trusting God's steady presence with this family through all that is to come.
