On 24 August 2014, I got the call that every parent dreads. My 23-year-old daughter Lilly had died in a single-car accident on her way home from geo-caching and exploring around the Lava Beds National Monument not far from her home in Dorris, California.
During early childhood, one of Lilly's favorite songs was John Prine's "Big Old Goofy World." One line in this song captures the essence of Lilly:
"Kiss a little baby, give the world a smile, and if you take an inch, give 'em back a mile."
Lilly's capacity for adventure and compassion seemingly knew no bounds. She never shied away from trying new things or traveling somewhere that she'd never been. More importantly, she was always there when it came to helping friends, particularly those in dire need. Just two days ago, I learned that some time back Lilly had taken a lifelong friend to a rehab center in hopes that he might beat his drug and alchohol addictions.
This campaign has four primary goals. First, our family needs immediate help covering the costs of Lilly's final arrangements, as she had no life insurance. Second, we want to help defray some of the travel costs of family and friends who came great distances on short notice in order to attend Lilly's recent celebration of life event. We also want to place a permanent memorial stone or bench at the Unitarian Universalist Church in her hometown of Eugene, Oregon and we are hoping to place a memorial bench at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, one of Lilly's favorite places.
Finally, we want to commemorate Lilly's compassion and passionate support of important causes by continuing to "give back a mile." Dating back to high school, Lilly was a staunch advocate for safe sex and planned parenthood. In honor of her commitment to these causes, ten percent of all funds raised through this campaign, along with all funds in excess of our goal ($12,000), will be donated to Planned Parenthood Southwestern Oregon.
