Hi Scott Black here. On August 20, 2013, I had what I thought was a routine appendectomy. My world changed the next morning when the surgeon called me and said “your tests came back positive.” My response: “positive for what?”
Appendicle cancer . . . Now one year later, four surgeries later, six months of chemo later, three hospitalizations later, and an additional 10 weeks of new chemo later . . . I am still fighting this beast we call cancer. I have stage 3 colon cancer that the first round of chemo didn’t touch.
Last fall many of our friends and colleagues at Charleston High School asked to help us financially with a benefit. At the time, I was still getting paid through sick days, including the generous donation of sick days from many of my CHS colleagues. I continued to work when I could, around my chemo schedule, through the months of January through May. So, we graciously declined our friends’ offers of financial support.
Now, however, I cannot work. Frankly, I am too sick from the new chemo, and I am awaiting another surgery on September 24, to remove an additional cancerous tumor in my colon. I am asking for your contribution to help with my medical expenses, travel expenses to the Mayo Clinic, and to supplement my disability payments, which are only equal to 40% of my salary.
But I’m planning to continue this fight and pull through, with God’s grace and healing, and beat the cancer and get back to work next Fall. So, for this year, I am asking for your generous donation to help me until I can get back to work and start supporting my family again.
It took me a long time to talk Kathy into letting me pursue this form of online benefit. For the last 20 years or so, we have been on the “giving” end, generously donating to a wide variety of charities (mostly ones that support youth and education), and our church. Trust me, I now truly know the expression “tis better to give than receive.” Rest assured that my plans for the future (including beating this cancer) are to give back to others who are battling this cruel disease. I just have to get well first and get back to work . . .
