Sustain HOPE in Colorado City

Colorado City, Arizona is a community of thousands known for their practice of polygamy and faithful devotion to leader/prophet Warren Jeffs. With their leader now in prison, the town nearly bankrupt, and thousands deemed unworthy, the community has experienced more division and unrest than ever.
In the last year and half, the Holding Out HELP community center, which is located in the heart of Colorado City, has offered hundreds of people a safe place in the midst of church upheaval and a tumultuous environment.

- The FLDS church controls EVERYTHING based on “worthiness”
- Entire families are being torn apart in attempt to purify the church
- The average education level is between 6th and 8th grade
- 90% of those we serve have suffered abuse
Holding Out HELP (HOH) has leased the property for the last 18 months but is now at risk of losing it. We have built bridges there and the local people have come to trust us with their stories, their needs, their children and most of all their hearts. We want nothing more than to be able to continue to sustain hope for these people.
We need $180,000 to purchase the Holding Out HELP community center and to continue our programs. Thanks to a large donation of $40,000 we have only $140,000 left to raise!
The Community Center offers educational workshops, social activities, food distribution and access to free or low-cost clothing at the thrift store. We offer sports camps, yoga classes, a computer lab and a safe place to grab a cup of coffee and visit with staff/volunteers. This center is a key component in restoring a healthy and self-sustaining environment for the residents that have long been displaced, rejected and alone.
Solidifying this property would give us the assurance we need to move forward. We could invest more energy and money in building sports fields, opening a full-service café, and continuing to expand the programs we offer so that the people we serve can become independent and self-sufficient.
