John (aka  - axegreatwolf) is my and my wife’s oldest nephew and first God son.  He is 26 years old.  A little over a month ago, John was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer, Peritoneal Mesothelioma https://mesothelioma.net/peritoneal-mesothelioma/

After having struggled with severe abdominal pain, fever, significant weight loss and other symptoms, a CT scan revealed a tumor in his abdomen and an exploratory surgery procedure was done.  The surgery resulted in the discovery of multiple tumors in his omentum (a large apron-like fold of visceral peritoneum that hangs down from the stomach).  The surgeon told John and the family that a diagnosis of this nature was extremely rare, especially for someone of his age.  He advised that action would be needed to be taken quickly to get specialists involved who could better determine the exact sub type and stage of the cancer.  This type of cancer is primarily caused by exposure to Asbestos, although it has been tied in a small percentage of cases to genetics.

There are very few specialists in the U.S. who have extensive experience in properly diagnosing and creating a treatment plan for Peritoneal Mesothelioma patients.  In the end, John and the family decided to go with the University of Chicago Cancer Center.  This facility has two leading medical experts in the treatment of this type of cancer.  It was also chosen because there isn’t currently a cure for Peritoneal Mesothelioma and the research component in searching for a potential future cure or alternative treatments was critical in their decision of where to go.

John currently lives on his own and supports himself financially.  Our fundraiser for him at this point is focused on helping to cover his medical expenses, travel costs for treatment back and forth to Chicago, his monthly living expenses, and the cost of COBRA coverage when his employer sponsored medical insurance coverage ends.

Please help us in giving John all the support he needs to beat this!

Thank you!
