Some of you may or may not know Sam English. Sam is a 75 year old Red Lake and Turtle Mountain Chippewa artist living in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He has been an activist for Indigenous rights from the 1960's-Now. Sam is also a self-proclaimed rebel, recovering alcoholic, and he has been working with Native non-profits all over Turtle Island creating poster print images and running healing workshops with art.

“I had a lot of anger and hostility about the way we were treated as humans. And self-pity, that is what alcoholism is all about.”-Sam English

For the past few years Sam has been trying to find benefactors or organizations to buy his life collection of artwork. Over 65 paintings and lithographs have been sitting in storage facilities and this collection is his retirement fund. During this time Sam's depression has heavily worsened and he has fallen into debt trying to stay afloat while he continues to search for a buyer. For several years he has been living in a small hotel room on central that has no space for painting, let alone for existing and surviving.

“Art is a spiritual process and when I talk about my art I include the Creator. Without the art, if I hadn’t continued to paint in my sobriety I wouldn’t be here painting. I wouldn’t be here, period. . . it doesn’t imply that I’m some sort of creative genius. I paint, but I think that I’m inspired to do this. I think somebody saved my life to do this. I think history, some contemporary history, and we try to do that with great dignity and humor and tradition and spirit.”-Sam English

As Sam English's children we know that our dad is the most amazing human. He deserves a home with a kitchen, bedroom, and painting area. Sam also deserves more support in searching for buyers for his collection. He has donated hundreds of images to non-profit organizations and asked for little in return. It took some work to convince our dad that he deserves and needs the basic necessities that all human beings need. Sam is constantly giving to others with his advice, wisdom, cup of coffee, or freaky jokes.

Sam has finally allowed us to create this, “Gofundme,” in order to start paying some of his debts.  $1000 will go towards credit card debts. $2,000 will cover a rental home for a few months and will include his security deposit and first and last month’s rent. $5,000 will cover a few months rent for the storage spaces that house his art collection. $2,000 will help us find a professional to help us market and sell his collection to an Indigenous organization or benefactor.

Sam needs a rental home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, preferably close to Starbucks in Nob Hill (Sam's favorite place of all time). Sam is without a vehicle so it's important to get him closer to a good neighborhood. This neighborhood is also close to Indian Health Services and allows Sam to easily access doctor’s appointments. If anyone knows of a rental property or has one available please contact us!

We also need assistance in marketing and selling this collection. Any leads on Indigenous organizations or benefactors would help us greatly!

We're trying to get dad into a rental a.s.a.p., so any and all donations are greatly appreciated. Our family has been taking on as much financial load as possible but we're unable to help more. We hope that by raising these funds we empower our father to continue being the independent art rebel he has always been.
