At San Diego City College Graphic Design we believe in books. To prove it our faculty secured a grant with the vision to open a library resource room in the new Arts and Humanities building. We want to make our collection of 3500 design books available to aspiring young creative minds and the community.
For our centennial year graphic design moved into a beautiful new building. In the first week of classes we were devastated to learn that our shelves were unexpectedly cut due to a lack of funding. This left our books on carts wrapped up in packing material. A local master carpenter stepped forward to help us. We need to raise $6,000 to build the locking shelves and create a place for our book collection to touch minds.
We have an award winning graphic design program providing high quality, affordable design education to students from all walks of life. Many of our students are the first person in their family to ever attend college and they have gone on to make a difference with their lives and work. Some have started small businesses, won the AIGA San Diego portfolio review and an Emmy, led the design team for a Presidential campaign and created work to help people in need displaced by natural disasters.
Our design resource library, named the Young Resource Room honors a dedicated teacher Doyald Young who won the American Institute of Graphic Arts Gold Medal. Doyald lived in Los Angeles but visited City College often bringing books and wisdom to share with students hungry for knowledge. No donation is too small to help us attain this goal. We are reaching out to those who believe in books and affordable education. Help us create a design resource library that will serve deserving students for decades to come.
